I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve posted anything. Time just seemed to get away from me. It isn’t that I haven’t been writing because I have; just not here and that is inexcusable.
During this time, the company I work for was purchased by a larger firm, so my job completely changed, my title changed twice, and my responsibilities became very different from what they had been.
Then to add insult to injury, my father passed away quite suddenly. Our family didn’t anticipate this happening after what should have been a routing pacemaker implant, but as with any surgery there are always risks. While those risks are low someone must make up the small percentage of fatalities that could potentially occur, and as it turned out my dad was one of that small number.
To this day, I miss him and think about him all the time.
Needless to say, the stress felt over the last number of years had left me unmotivated to write and plain old tired to the point that even the places I was writing had seen me post only sporadically.
The place I had chosen to write was on Medium and for a time I was pretty consistent. For the most part I focused that writing on primarily on technology and writing. What lured me was the money. I finally could write the things that interested me and potentially make a few dollars in the process. This proved to be futile. I wasn’t prolific enough to make the real money some were making, but I kept on trying. I thought I could be the next successful writer, but the reality was that it wasn’t to be.
I finally became discouraged enough that my writing consistency suffered until I stopped writing on there altogether. My last post on Medium was a month after my father died –July 2025. This was my last post online anywhere. The funny thing is that as I was writing this I had to go look to see when I’d last posted and I had no idea it had been that long…what a surprise!
After that last post I wrote a few poems, started a couple of novels, and started and stopped a few other projects, but nothing posted online. Lots of partially finished works are waiting for me to pick them up again.
Over the last couple of months, I frequently thought about what had gone wrong. I’ve been writing for a very long time having been first published when I was 9 years old and now I’m in my early 60s. Becoming a writer has been all I’ve wanted to do since I was very young but if I’m to be honest, I think procrastination brought on by fear has been my nemesis for as long as I can remember.
All this is to say that my fear made me forget the reason I started writing in the first place –because it was fun, and that is a shame.
I’ve decided that fun must be the first reason I write and that anything else that comes out of it will just be icing on the cake. The bottom line is that I’m just going to have fun, and then see where that takes me.
I’m going to use this post as my launching point to get back into the creative pursuit that I love so dearly.
I look forward to reading your writings as well as I’ve been negligent in that area too. Thank you to everyone who stuck with me in my absence, and I look forward to introducing myself to anyone new who graciously decides to join me on this journey.
I give my best to all of you.
