The Finer Things – A Tanka

merlot

A walk on the beach

Sand, wind and sun renew

Like a fine Merlot

Warming one’s heart and one’s soul

While pleasing to the palate

Rear window sticker

Proclaiming, “I love my wife”

Aren’t you supposed to?

~~ D. R. DiFrancesco

These window stickers that I see all over the place bring a smile to my face.  As the husband in a marriage aren’t you supposed to love your wife?  This seems to be stating the obvious and certainly nothing that you need to advertise on you vehicle.   If it isn’t, then I missed something during my vows.  Is there nothing that we won’t stick on our cars?

This Must Be Paradise

The band playing,

Something Caribbean and acoustic.

Cigarette smoke swirling,

Thick and dreamy,

Like a storm cloud overhead.

Reminiscent of Bogie and Bacall.

Tropical breezes,

Twisted by bamboo fans,

Deliberate spin.

Ice tinkles as it slides to the bottom of the empty glass.

Another scotch,

Single malt on the rocks.

Humidity in the air,

Sweat streams like the gulf tide.

Cotton shirt,

A combination of moisture and salt.

The pattern of the tropics.

Surf sounds,

Rolling gently,

Up the sugar sand shore.

Moon glistening,

Off the albino caps.

Palm fronds,

Softly rustle high overhead,

Breaking the silhouette,

Of the tangerine moon.

There is no place I’d rather be.

Tropical breeze,

Kettle drums,

Smell of the ocean,

And single malt,

Surely this must be…

Heaven on earth.

Ode to Alicia

O’ what sorrows hang under the placid moon,

Beguiled as we wait before an open tomb.

~~

Unexpectedly passing in horrid way,

O’er the hilltop, contorted and lifeless you lay.

~~

Cowardly murderer ran with haste from his deed,

Hiding as rats will do in thicket and weed.

~~

Hide from God! You most certainly cannot,

Judgement at the gates will harshly begot.

~~

O’ dear Alicia…how young and innocent you were,

Just a child– Undeserving of a life to pass as a blur.

~~

While the foul miscreant thrives and lives on,

Corrupt of conscience, never considered you were gone.

~~

O’ how the parents grieve for their little lost soul,

All while this pariah slithers into Satan’s black hole.

~~

Squalid tomb– Why take solace in so young a life?

So cold, so final, no comfort to the progenitors strife!

~~

Judgement befitting the crime, our earthly courts did not levy,

Cries for hanging be raised at the hands of a justified bevy.

~~

No! Justice in this lifetime is not to be,

Pray God, Hell’s hanging tree hath a place for he.

~~

As the tomb eternal be sealed from the light,

Candles pay homage to a life once so bright.

~~

A place be laid for you Alicia…at the foot of God’s throne,

For all to take comfort that you will never be alone.

Sympathetic ear

Listening without a word

A very good friend

Charitable

Does benevolence pain you?

It should not…

Others welfare-

Mustn’t be a cause of discomfort,

But a source of joy,

A gift of fulfillment,

Done out of obligation,

Not of demand,

Instead an obligation,

To care for your brothers,

And sisters in need,

In their moment of distress.

Time or money,

It matters not,

When done out of…

The goodness of heart.

Rebirth – A Tanka

This place I stand now

The pinnacle of my life

Like the beginning

Everyday is a new day

Another chance for rebirth

Pain

In the throng,

I spied you sitting solo,

Green of the bench,

Accenting your eyes,

You didn’t see me,

Melded into the swarm,

Sadness pooled in your eyes,

Hurt by God knows what,

I wanted to be the one,

Be the penicillin to heal you,

But it was not to be,

Pain came to comfort you,

Thrusting an arm around you,

Mopping dry your crimson stained eyes,

Hand-in-hand you strolled away,

One spartan look,

Cast over your shoulder,

You knew I was there,

Without truly knowing,

But your heart was committed to another,

Committed to Pain…

Of love.

The Heart Wants

You’ve broken my heart,

Taking what’s left of me,

Grinding me up,

Tossing my ash to the four winds.

Questioning what I saw in you,

I should have listened,

Love is blind,

And so was I.

Reckless and foolish,

Naive perhaps,

But isn’t that how love is,

Without logic,

Without thought,

Utterly ignorant.

They say,

The heart wants,

What the heart wants,

In this lies the only truth.

Awakened from dreams

Drenched in cold sweat, thoughts of you

Spin like a typhoon

A path of devastation

Left in the wake of heartbreak
