Pandemic (Acrostic)

Pain and suffering, black verse white
Another reason to divide us
No one is immune, young or old the death toll rises
Denial won’t make it go away
Eventually, it will strike home
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends everyone knows someone
Ignorance is not bliss
Crises are real as the mass graves reveal.

End Game

Ego reared it’s ugly head

Needing a way to feed

Demanding sustenance in blood.

Gone is thoughtful consideration

At the hands of incompetence.

Maybe lawful consensus before launch would have

Esured our moral justification…what now?

Wisdom

Wasted on the young

I know because I was them once

Stubborn, invincible, I would live forever

Death seemed so far off

On the far side of halfway I want to share my lessons

Maybe this time someone will listen, then again why should this time be different

Impunity

Injustice lives on

Made evident by our courts

Poverty and racism feed its hunger

Until blood is spilled to satisfy

Nothing changes, civil rights are a myth

Insinuated to please the skeptics

Then in one fell swoop

Yet another innocent dies with no justice served

Revolution

Rage seething under the surface

Eating away at our collective souls

Vitriol has been lodged against us

Only further stoking our resolve

Lost is our trust in the institutions

Undoing the work of the founders

Til only one response seems clear

Insurrection

Outright revolt against the tyrants

Neutering the petulant bunch

Racism

Reviled in the public’s eye

Acknowledged in back alleys and darkened rooms

Color, race and creed are offered up as fodder

In this election year repulsiveness has reared its head

Staining our image in the eyes of the world

Maybe this was the ugly secret we needed to keep hidden

Sanctimonious

Superiority screams arrogance

And angers those who feel slighted,

Nothing will inspire an enemy more.

Clearly we do not learn from history.

The Roman Empire fell,

Ignorance was their downfall.

More and more I see this in us.

Obviously we’ll blame it on human nature,

Never looking back at past mistakes.

It is our way…someone else is always at fault.

Offering an olive branch is seen as weakness,

Undermining our moral standing.

Surely I had hoped we were smarter than this.

Community

Comradery of souls

Offered without pretense;

More could not be asked for

Making the cause all the more special.

Unity of purpose unites

Nailing hearts and minds to a common cross,

Instilling strength to carry on the fight.

Though hardship and hatred will try to stifle,

Yearning for understanding and equality can never be silenced.

Serenade

Subtle rays of sun awake

Earthly living things.

Rising up as day does break

Easing out of dreams.

Now the song the dove must sing

Announces the new morn.

Donned in heaven’s golden ring

Ever thankful to be born.
