Calm before the storm
Old saying with much value
World on the verge

Raging wild files,
Severe drought kills the heartland,
Hotter summers thrive,
Our polar caps are melting,
Wild swings in our weather.
Science has spoken
Yet many refuse to hear…
Climate change is real!
Because it affects profits
They bury their heads in sand.
“I’m no scientist”,
Is the rock they crawl under
When it does suit them.
Refusing to admit greed
Is their real reason to kill.
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
The sun is setting, bathing our fall in the last rays of day.
Still we sleep sound in the quiet of darkness,
Oblivious to what awaits
Even though it has been foretold by sages and fools.
This end will not come with the concussion of a bomb,
It will not be suffered by the bloodletting of a bullet
These would be less painful.
It will come to us by our own greed,
Our ignorance and inhumanity will trounce us,
Look at those that came before,
The great Roman Empire.
Where is it now?
Oh yes it exists in its crumbling ruins,
Disintegrating coins dredged from the bottom of the sea
And legendary despots littering history books.
The sun has set for them yet their kind still exists.
Look no further than America!
This land of so much promise has been duped,
Fooled by its aristocrats and their vast wealth.
They stoke the fires of hatred and prejudice to divide us
Until we become immune to the putrid bile they spew.
They trust that factless propaganda will be trusted,
That we won’t take the time to hold them accountable…
And they are right, we are sheep being lead to slaughter.
What will it take to wake us up from their fear?
We are arrogant and pathological in our policy,
Refusing to take blame for even the smallest thing.
Climate change is real say our climate scientists
Yet we deny it because we aren’t scientists.
ISIS did not sprout out of thin air,
We created it with our insatiable thirst for oil
And the deaths of those we were determined to depose.
Education, social security and Medicare are in danger
Due to their incessant need to privatize and profiteer.
Tell me, what did they do to make you trust blindly?
All they did was tell you whose fault it is,
What group to hate,
That social programs like socialism are evil,
That they will watch your back and protect you
While taking away your civil rights in subtle ways.
Their votes send your jobs away all the while you beg them to help you.
Really what did they give you to vote away your best interest?
Lower taxes, privatization of government services, more free trade and job loses,
The right to openly discriminate against your fellow Americans,
All under the guise of some imagined religious war.
I really don’t understand what has happened,
When we stopped being logical and informed,
When we started believing in the oligarch’s fairytales,
When we became cultists to the media.
All I know is that changes are coming
So be careful what you wish for.

The heavens opened
And tears fell in a deluge
Drowning out the sun.
Show me we deserve its warmth,
The joy we get from its light.
There is so much wrong
And none of it is our fault,
Or so we believe.
Climate change, its natural;
Pollution, blame the Chinese.
Procrastination,
Our answer for everything,
How terribly sad.
“It can wait ‘til tomorrow”;
Is our national motto.
Yes, heaven opened,
Its tears fell as acid rain,
But it’s not our fault.
Leave it all for the children,
We’ll be gone soon anyway.
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
Lament the death of our rivers,
Mourn the toxicity of our air.
Ground once fertile, now parched
Turned desert through our own creation.
Crops wilted and brown
Turn to dust in the noon day sun.
Forests deprived of their lushness
Erode with the slightest hint of rain.
Ravenous pits left barren–
Raped of their precious innocence.
Fracking and drilling–
Consequences of looming disaster ignored.
Ceaseless development choking out nature
Exterminating both the large and the small.
Extinction of whole species despised
When confronting progress.
Denying climate change as a left-wing concoction
Though science the world over proves otherwise.
I watch as all manner of pollution and greed desecrates out world.
Those that speak out are damned as tree-huggers,
Anti-free market liberals, un-American, communists, socialists, unpatriotic.
Is not defending this planet noble?
Do we not owe this fight to our children and their children?
If we can prevent further degradation do they not deserve it?
We have witnessed this day coming,
Nature has foretold of its demise for many a generation at the hands of man
Yet we chose not to see!
Ignorance my friends is not bliss,
It is selfish and egotistical,
It is born of indifference and hate,
Its offspring is ruin and our own extinction!
For what–
A few pieces of silver,
Prestige, accolades, the ivory tower?
What good is any of this if the earth succumbs to carnage?
Take a moment to look at the grandeur of what surrounds you,
This is magnificence beyond any designs of man.
Breathe its air,
Drink of its pure waters,
Gaze with wonder upon its fertile plains,
Glorious mountains, vast and tranquil oceans,
Before it is too late,
For this is true divinity without measure.
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
Why I ask is it that we choose to destroy,
Leaving vast swaths of land ravaged,
Acres of ocean uninhabitable,
Water unfit for consumption,
Farms barren of life-giving crops,
Forests clear cut for human development
Exploitation of the gifts given to mankind,
Simply…I do not know!
Why is it that we deny the evidence,
Oceans rising to previously unrecorded levels,
Temperatures, the hottest in history,
Storms, perfect and oh so deadly,
Property destroyed and lives lost,
Still we refuse to believe,
Why–I do not know!
Why is it that we allow ourselves to be victims,
Plagued by profiteers,
Suffocated by our government,
Tolerant of our polarization,
Blind to our abuses,
Living as pawns to the powerful,
Yet we choose to ignore,
Why, I haven’t a clue!
Why we have allowed this to happen, I do not know,
We have become complacent,
Allowing our fellows to trample our dreams,
Stifling that which is our destiny
Instead of finding common ground,
Leaving us more distant than ever.
I wish I knew how to fix the ills of this world,
But I do not!
I like you, am only a temporary inhabitant,
Borrowing my time in this life.
Why must we destroy this precious world
Poisoning ourselves and those we love
With words and chemicals?
Material gain and profit are fleeting like this existence.
Shouldn’t we endeavor to make the most of what we’ve been given?
Isn’t this what it means to be human,
To use what we need leaving the rest for our future?
Perhaps I am naive,
A dreamer,
Or just hopeful,
But I must believe that it is not too late
For man to overcome his arrogance and greed.

Smoke wafts o’er the granite mountainside;
Black and thick in a murderous haze.
Sulfur taints the crusty putrid air
Drowning out the glorious scent of honeysuckle and pine.
Babbling brooks once vocal no longer babble;
Their voices silenced by dam, drought and pollution.
Dry and cracked beds mar earths aging face
Leaving tinder for natures fiery furnace.
From my hilltop perch a murky brown sludge chokes the valley floor.
What hazards are these we should ask,
Though no one cares but for convenience and profit.
As we seek cause and cure for man’s maladies
Might we look no further than ourselves,
Our misuse of natures gifts,
Our burning of fossil fuels,
Pollution of our most precious resources–air and water,
Is it any wonder we are plagued with incurable disease?
Yet even the slightest attempts to change course
Are stalled by the profiteers gauntlet.
Science–when used for their benefit is gospel,
But dismissed as leftist propaganda
When the planet and climate are on stage.
Look beyond your four walls,
Breathe deeply,
Feel the burn in your tainted lungs,
Wipe the tears from your stinging eyes and look if you can,
Is this the vision of paradise that you sought
For you and your children?
