A suburban trap
Safety on a white washed street
It’s an illusion
Life offers no guarantees
Regardless of one’s color

We stand in arrogance,
Our own world–the only world
Feeling not the pain of others.
We are removed, unsympathetic, unconcerned,
It does not touch our lives.
You cannot touch video.
You cannot smell the written word.
You cannot taste their anguish.
Too far separated are we!
It is not real though we know it is,
Allowing oceans to separate safety from reality.
Sit quietly in the warmth and comfort of your homes,
Sip your coffee, piping hot and fresh,
Enjoy the bounty of the food that surrounds you,
Sleep well in the softness of your bed,
Watch your news,
Read your paper,
Pretend that all is right with the world,
But remember distance is merely an illusion.

What’s our future hold
My only hope is for peace
Peace for our children
Look into their guiltless eyes
How could you pull the trigger

Dear son–a man now
I must learn to let you go

Abandon your fears
Scatter caution to the wind
For you only have one chance
A life lived in certainty
Will end in disappointment

Do you ever reminisce about your childhood?
Rockem-Sockem Robots, Spirograph, Lincoln Logs,
Candy cigarettes, wax lips, pixie sticks,
Banana seats on bikes, slick tires and sissy bars,
Bell bottoms, Converse, crew cuts,
Bouffants, Brill Cream, electric rollers,
Station wagons, record players, eight tracks,
No seat belts, no car seats, laying on the rear deck
to see out the back window,
Sneaking your parents smokes
And maybe their booze,
Just for fun,
Never worrying for our safety.
Do you ever reminisce about your childhood?
I do.

To face the truth
One must face what they fear most
What’s uncomfortable builds character
Strengthens every fiber of their being
You cannot grow physically or spiritually alone
Cradled in your convenient cocoon
To break out and take wing you must fall
Close your eyes
Step over the edge into the unknown
Destiny beckons you forward
Choosing to live life in a net of safety disappoints
Conceiving regret as it’s progeny
This is not living, it is merely existing
We are meant to do and become what we dream
No boundaries can contain you
Was not every great achievement born of an impossible vision
Laughed upon by those with no imagination
Dare to persevere
Do not let those of a narrow mind stifle you
Your greatness lies on the road just ahead
In this you can be assured

Children and adult villages pelt
the vehicles with rocks as they pass

I don’t pretend to know the feelings of war,
I’ve never served,
Instead living the joy and sorrow,
Loneliness and homesickness through my son.
Here I sit in my easy chair,
TV tuned to CNN,
Disgusted that there is no coverage,
Do they even remember we are at war?
I remember every waking hour of the day,
Passing my sons empty room,
Left as a constant reminder that he’s far from home,
Living in squalor, among Camel Spiders and Taliban.
He wrote,
Finally I realize…
Everything here wants to kill us,
My eyes welled up with tears.
He’s his own man now,
No longer can his mother and I protect him,
Our trust must be placed in his training,
Relying on his bravery and strength.
This makes it no easier,
Weeks pass with no word,
Sadness and worry are all consuming,
Struggling to maintain sanity.
Then a brief call or message online,
All is well, could you send me a few things,
I need new boots, snacks, vitamins,
My God its hot here.
For just a few moments there is happiness,
Content that for now he is safe,
Then he is gone again,
No word for weeks.
Sitting in my easy chair,
Still no coverage on TV,
Certain that they have forgotten.
Praying for the next call.
Don’t worry,
I’m safe and doing well.
