Borders porous fence
A thousand miles…freedom
Better life awaits
If only we are not caught
Sent back to our poverty
Dreaming the same dreams
From different time and place
No ships, no Ellis Island
Only a desert
Separating a new life
From a life lived in squalor

… and if you replace desert with sea, you have just as elegantly captured the plight of all the African illegals that try to get from North Africa to southern Europe…
You are correct, I’m sure that many peoples could be replaced in this poem with the same result. š
wonderful poem – it seems once upon a time immigration had this almost romantic feel about it – leaving the old country on boats to cross the ocean…….. at least this is how the movies made it out to be. now it seems to be anything – but…
You are so right, thank you Kimberly.:)
That greener grass . . .
Yes it is, although I am not sure that it truly is greener. š
Love this: “Better life awaits
If only we are not caught
Sent back to our poverty
Dreaming the same dreams
From different time and place”
So poignant.
Thank you so much. š
Dom, your poems are always amazing. Being an immigrant myself, I love this poem especially. For dreams and a better future.
Well, I for one am so glad that you are here. You add so much to the rich fabric of this nation making us all the better for you being her. š
