Sorrow Fills My Soul

Sorrow fills my soul looking out to the in that is black and distasteful

Choking my essence and making me hateful

I bleed trying to quench the pain, but the pain won’t let go

What a fool I am and what a fool I show

No one knows it’s me because I keep it hidden in the deepest recesses

But God knows the heart that to myself confesses

I do nothing, justifying my wrongs just to live day-to-day

Though my conscience constantly gets in the way

What is it I’m after, what is it that I want as dollar after dollar goes to hell

Get rich quick, strike the jackpot, revel in the winning bell

It’s a fools dream, one that seldom comes true

A realization for no one, but the fortunate few

I swear each day after to turn down a different road, vowing to refrain

Sadly each let down, self-inflicted causes immeasurable pain

I don’t know if I can do this myself, do it all alone

When temptation knocks at every door where my weakness has shown

I’m scared, terrified at my persistent weakness

What demon has possessed me engraining this bleakness

Perhaps it’s me, my mind, and nothing more is to blame

Perhaps it’s just a weakness of character or a lifetime of shame

Maybe it’s just an excuse for a depressive mind

Or maybe it is really nothing of the kind

If help reaches out it to throw me a life-line

Gladly I’d take it as a telling sign

That nothing that happens cannot be cured

With love and kindness and strength that is assured

I put my life in the hands of a power higher than myself

Struggling to put my ego on a shelf

What else am I to do, but try and try again to be a better man

Doing what I know is right and doing what I can

There’s No Place Like Home (Tanka)

There’s no place like home

Family huddled around

Sharing Christmas cheer

Unless home is on the street

And your cheer is someones trash

A little reminder to be generous to those in need at this time and all times of the year,  if for no other reason than it is the right thing to do.

‘Tis Truly Frigid

‘Tis truly frigid

A day the heart cannot warm.

Generosity–

Kindling of the mortal soul

Will most surely stoke the fire.

The littlest things–

A friendly conversation,

An unneeded coat,

Time, money, acknowledgment

Can brighten someones whole day.

Do not judge their worth

For none and all are worthy;

Kindness is the key.

Give much and expect nothing

This–the true meaning of love.

Prompt: CARPE DIEM’S TACKLE IT TUESDAY #16 CHARITY

Pain Like No Other

Pain…like no other

Living–wrong side of the tracks.

Dirty and hungry;

Sunken eyes reveal sadness

Under shroud of filthy streets.

Urchins you call them,

Throwaways to be ignored,

Wastes of human flesh.

Where is your humanity?

They’re people like you and me

Children of this world

Worthy of our sympathy

Worthy of our love

You best take heed!

For one day it may be you

That is spit upon.

Cast Into Shadows

Cast into shadows,

A scourge on society

Like lepers banished.

The downtrodden vilified

Are treated as a burden.

Is this not unfair

Of those in authority

Trusted to do right?

By their own self-interest,

Those that need them most are lost,

Left to their vices

Just to dull the endless pain.

Their cries unanswered

Fade quietly in the night,

‘Til no longer seen or heard.

Looking Back (Shakespearean Sonnet)

Looking  back upon the boy of youth,

The world seemed such a hopeful place;

So full of promise and full of truth,

Enough for all the human race.

Government a partner and a friend,

One we did not need to fear.

Alway there with a helping hand,

Their mission statement was oh so clear.

Protect and nurture and not infringe;

The mandate since the fathers founded.

Avoid at all cost a spending binge;

Ideals of old were firmly grounded.

Now this world once so full of hope

Is sliding down corruptions slippery slope.

Authors Note: This is my first attempt at a sonnet, I know it isn’t quite as Shakespearean as Shakespeare would have liked it, but it seemed to work for the topic.
