Age before beauty
Tis honor or sarcasm
My vote…sarcasm
Our respect for age exists
Only when it benefits

We have forgotten!
The New Deal has been destroyed
And we don’t see it.
Social Security and
Medicare under attack.
Cleverly disguised
By the “old standby”…tax cuts
They try to bankrupt;
Forcing the extinction of
Our long beloved safety nets.
When will we wake up!
The middle-class is dying,
While privilege thrives.
When we are homeless and sick
Maybe then we’ll remember.

What lives within us,
Deep beneath skin’s shallowness?
Beauty is finite
Where the senses are concerned.
Time eats away at our flesh…
No one is immune.
The mirror lies to the young.
Tricked by ignorance
They believe it’s forever.
Surely age doth prove them wrong
As it has done for eons.
Better spent is time
Seeing the beauty within.
Love and compassion,
They have no physical bounds…
They cannot be kept.
These are things of true beauty,
Things cherished for a lifetime.
Given with no material cost,
But having immeasurable value
These are what are precious to me.
This is the beauty,
That lies deep within.

So many aches and pains
Never use to be this way
I could go for hours
Suddenly the years take toll
And the body does rebel
Very strange indeed
These natural frailties
That affect us all
One can cosmetically fight
But in the end…aging wins

Ravaged by the years
Bodies surrender to time
Winter of our lives
~~ Dominic R. DIFrancesco ~~
Forced into uselessness
Our society deems them a nuisance
Retiring them to the annals of history
Gone are the days they were revered
Only a culture of arrogance would discard their wisdom
Trusting instead in the coldness of technology
This is our way, leaving them out in the cold
Entombing them before their time
Never seeing beyond the length of their years

To feel young again
My aches and my pains vanquished
Tireless child
They say it’s a state of mind
My body says otherwise

Old dogs learn new tricks
Though maybe not as quickly
Patience a virtue
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
Mind fading away
Ravaged by illness and age
Fate of so many
Such a sad state of affairs
Watching those we love forget
≈
Feeling so helpless
We’ve become total strangers
Passing in the night
Frustration steeped in sadness
Becomes our permanent state

I strive to be as the sapling;
Flexible in the path of the raging gale.
The sapling does not struggle against its foe,
It does not stand rigid as an elder,
It bows gracefully and without pretense.
Even in its youth
The sapling knows it could not withstand the fury,
So by yielding it survives unscathed.
This is the wisdom lost to maturity.
With age the sapling becomes increasingly inflexible
Until in time its trunk refuses to bend.
We are not so unlike the simple tree,
Showing great resilience in childhood,
Becoming unwavering and obstinate with age.
Oh what I would not give to be as the lowly sapling.
