Best Friend

A look, a pant, a gentle nudge,

Awake, excited to start the day.

It takes no more than a subtle budge,

To coax them on to run and play.

~

From birth to passing their childlike heart,

Endears them to the soul of man.

Its been this way from the very start,

Proud and loving at our side they stand.

~

Loyal ‘til their final day,

They’ll leave us not until our end.

Ne’re a doubt at our feet they’ll stay,

A heartfelt thanks to man’s best friend.

Miles Apart

Living miles apart,

Acting like casual friends

Instead of siblings.

Visits far too infrequent

And our calls are far too few.

We have grown distant.

Not because of difference,

We are not that kind,

But because our life journey,

Leads us down different roads.

With The Coming Of Summer

With the coming of summer

The years midlife begins in earnest.

Infancy is replaced by the maturity of time,

The dead forgotten to the wake of new life,

No more is there the barrenness of winter.

Cold, gray nakedness gives way to colors multitude,

Death’s pungent odor yields to the fragrance of flora,

Rebirth is complete…for a time.

Youthful fauna take comfort in nature’s bounty

Feeding in gluttonous fervor,

Instinctively knowing it is but momentary,

With the scarcity of later year fast approaching.

What a wondrous gift is nature;

Our lives mimicking her cyclic clock,

Stages of life revealed since time began.

The cries of children

Parents look on through their tears

Hunger still exists

Agony Of Love – A Tanka

Agony of love

A hearts beat torn asunder

Ripped from breathing chest

Leaving it hollow and cold

Emptied of any passion

Love’s Dance – A Tanka

Breath– your lips on mine

Warm and moist against my skin

Every nerve dancing

Calling ecstasy by name

In our love’s coital dance

Sentimentality And Longing

Sentimentality and longing–drowning

In a sea of what was.

Knowing that one can never go back

To childhood,

To before grandma died,

Before the loss of grandpa,

Before any of the idiotic decisions we make

During the folly of our youth and beyond.

The impossibility of this is obvious;

Time only marches forward,

Steady and resolute in its determination.

Leaving us, if we choose to stay,

in the dust and cobwebs of our past.

One must ask, “To what end?”

To be passed…

By opportunities for love,

The love of family,

All the good that life has to offer.

A life of misery,

A life of hoping for what was,

What can never be,

This is the fate of so many.

Living in sorrow, void of hope,

Void of happiness,

Drowning–in sentimentality and longing.

End Of Day – A Tanka

End of day quiet

As sunset breezes relieve

Easing tired mind

The joy of dark solitude

Readies me for a new start

The Worker

You blame the unions,

You blame the American worker,

Moving your plants overseas.

~

You say we want too much.

Is a decent quality of life too much,

A living wage to raise our families.

~

You take no blame on yourself,

Your greedy shareholders,

Gnarled hands outstretched,

Grasping for a greater piece of the pie.

~

You cry, profits are down;

Consumers aren’t buying!

You take our jobs away

Giving them to those in the third world.

~

No job, no money, no spending,

Where is your logic?

You ask for more from us

Giving us less for our labors,

Yet our bleeding is still not enough.

~

Our blood, our sweat means nothing,

No longer are we people,

No longer do you show us loyalty.

~

Profits reign king in your corrupt world

And we are merely paupers,

Struggling in your greed poisoned kingdom.

Awkward

Gangly legs

Ungraceful swan

Awkward reflection

Imperfect beauty

Work in progress

Opaque vision

Transparent in age

Metamorphosis

Gorgeous butterfly

Biding time

‘Til wings spread
