Storms rage with fury
Devastating destruction
Tearing limb-from-limb
Pain not invoked by nature
But by a tormented soul

You look on appalled and concerned
Just as I look at you.
Maybe he’s out for walk,
Bird watching,
Enjoying the sun or the weather.
Oh no, that can not be,
We haven’t seen him before!
Where did he come from?
Where is he going?
He must be up to no good.
Casing the joint,
Looking to rob us,
Rape our women,
Set fire to our homes,
Surely he must be a criminal,
He does not belong here!
But why incredulous?
He doesn’t look like us,
His type doesn’t live in this neighborhood.
He’s the wrong color,
Certainly he must be muslim
Or gay,
Or dealing drugs to our kids
And hates this country.
This is the twenty-first century,
Haven’t we moved beyond our prejudice?
Shamefully…
No!
Hateful glances say no,
Joblessness says no,
Homelessness says no,
Hearts and minds say no,
Ignorance still exists,
The year,
The decade,
The century matters not.
In correctness some bite their tongues,
But their medieval minds dictate.
Thoughts expressed through actions,
Conversations held in the shadows,
The like-minded nodding in approval.
So little have we progressed,
Claims of enlightenment ring hollow.
Baseless assumptions poisoning us,
Fear used as justification,
Repetition brainwashing the ignorant.
When will it end,
This perpetuation of hate,
Cloaked as patriotism, religion,
Our constitutional right?

I see you–sights of you everywhere I go,
Awake, asleep, eyes closed or open.
I feel you in every moment of every day,
When I’m alone or in a crowd.
You my love are so ingrained in me,
Individuals–yes, but we are one.
We share a history and travel into one future,
Plotting course through this life.
Joys and sorrows, trials and tribulations,
All have made us who we are,
Made us stronger through adversity.
These are not to be regretted, but cherished,
Part of living the life we have been given.
Not one moment would I change,
Would I give back exchanging it for another.
We are who we are my love,
No more from this life could I ask.

Wind through cottonwoods
Rustling on summers breeze
Green against blue sky
Giving shade from noonday sun
Time for a long siesta

Black molten pavement
Heat waves rising toward heaven
Obscuring vision
A long road trip to nowhere
Destination has no name

Flowers by the road
White crosses a reminder
Someones tragedy
Anonymous to strangers
Loved by family and friends

Shuffle of footsteps
Outside a closed bedroom door
Nighttime playing tricks
Monsters and demons lurking
Waiting to pounce in your dreams

Echos cascade off these grey stony walls,
Eerie howls toll down shadow darkened halls.
What is the source I would not venture a guess,
Haunting the days into night as it falls.
~
Hearing their cries during every waking hour,
Crimson eyes glare from medieval watch tower.
Diverting away, surely this mustn’t be real,
With cape drawn up tight beneath I do cower.
~
Dashing from the castle to my cottage I must run,
Hoping for arrival before the setting of the sun.
Horrors await those found wandering after dark,
Til vengeance be exacted once the terror has begun.
~
Legend doth tell of the rising of the dead,
Of innocent and guilty who lost their heads.
By creature or demon no one can be sure,
Hide we all did behind locked doors and under beds.
~
Obscured by shadow and cover of the night,
The beast waged it’s terror hidden from sight.
Unsuspecting victims their lives it did take,
Expressions on their faces was one of pure fright.
~
How to defend against one you can’t see,
Nowhere is safe were the cries with mercies plea.
Huddled, crouched and muffled in pure fear,
Imaginations run wild, dear God what can it be.
~
Screams in the distance carried under darkened moon,
Praying for sunrise it can’t come too soon.
As quick as the screams rose they came to an end,
Silence was broken by the song of the oon.
~
The new day awoke no more need to hide,
Slowly, cautiously door unbolted we went outside.
Blood splattered drag marks we were led on our way,
At the horrible sight women fainted, men cried.
~
Hanging from a tree bow with nearly severed head,
Hung the body of a stranger mangled, bloodied and dead.
The demon he had struck in a most savage way,
Stringing up the innocent into thin air he then fled.
~
No footprints nor trace of which way he did leave,
Lowering to the ground for the poor man we did grieve.
Time had passed so quickly as nighttime fast approached,
Picking up the victim for burial we did heave.
~
Laying him to rest for darkness we prepared,
No one spoke a word of the terror that we shared.
Another night of evil behind bolt and hardened doors,
Hoping to survive proving the Lord our God had cared.
~
Have mercy on the traveler that knows not what goes on,
The devil lurking in the woods we’re praying that he’s gone.
For centuries we’ve done the same with always the same answer,
In this land of demon’s folly we are nothing but his pawns.

Idle hands do not an idle mind make,
For sitting in silence much effort does it take.
With unflappable thought the body grows more tired,
It is no easy feat to control synaptic fire.
When treated as sloth brain-work is mistaken,
Laziness it’s not, your logic is misshapen.
Without the strain of thought no greatness would exist,
No literature, no art, no inventions could persist.
So lest contemplation be treated as a waste,
You’re best to just say thank you with a smile on your face.
