50 Word Story: Conquering America

Gentle spirals of smoke rose from earthen huts, children played and women performed their chores while their men hunted for game.  Such a peaceful site in the face of impending carnage.

The army gathered on the distant rise preparing to launch its attack to conquer the land these people worshiped.

Reason to Kill

Raging wild files,

Severe drought kills the heartland,

Hotter summers thrive,

Our polar caps are melting,

Wild swings in our weather.

Science has spoken

Yet many refuse to hear…

Climate change is real!

Because it affects profits

They bury their heads in sand.

“I’m no scientist”,

Is the rock they crawl under

When it does suit them.

Refusing to admit greed

Is their real reason to kill.

In Blissful Silence

In blissful silence

I sit simply listening,

Breathing in the sounds.

Tell me…how long has it been

Since I relished birds singing,

Crickets in summer,

The first flakes of winter’s snow

Wind rustling leaves.

It has been far, far too long

Since I’ve reached out to nature.

Too busy with life,

I seem to have forgotten

What is beautiful.

Perhaps it’s time to slow down

And take in God’s creation.
