Idle hands do not an idle mind make,
For sitting in silence much effort does it take.
With unflappable thought the body grows more tired,
It is no easy feat to control synaptic fire.
When treated as sloth brain-work is mistaken,
Laziness it’s not, your logic is misshapen.
Without the strain of thought no greatness would exist,
No literature, no art, no inventions could persist.
So lest contemplation be treated as a waste,
You’re best to just say thank you with a smile on your face.

Lovely, flowing words coupled with philosophy. I especially loved the first two lines:
“Idle hands do not an idle mind make,
For sitting in silence much effort does it take.”
Looks like I will have to put this up on my wall and read it everyday…! I am one restless soul! 😀
Thank you very much.
I discovered your blog via BLOG IT OR LOSE IT. I’m enjoying your poetry.
I appreciate that very much, I love Jen’s work and read all of her posts. I’ll be sure to check your blog out as well. Again, thank you.
Hi Dom!
Love the poem, especially “For sitting in silence much effort does it take.” — trying to get a 12 year old boy to practice this from time to time. Oh. My. If the kid would just slow down and think and rely on his own imagination to keep him busy instead of electronics … yikes.
I can tell you it doesn’t get much easier as they get older. My son who is going to be 23 loves his video games when he is not working. I personally think they are a waste of time, but I guess that is primarily due to my age so I try not to say too much.
Choosing one’s battles … it’s a tough one!
I like video games from time to time, but like you, I realize they’re a time waster so I try to keep it to a minimum.
It most certainly is and since he doesn’t live home anymore I really don’t have much control over what he does with his free time. Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to get over it. 🙂
😀
I suspect that as he gets older, the games will lose their appeal. Mostly. 😉
I would assume that they will, he is young, but is a good man none-the-less. 🙂
