Settle for nothing
For settling leaves you cold
And full of regrets

Settle for nothing
For settling leaves you cold
And full of regrets
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
Looking across the field
Sun blinding me
I’m in a trance,
Mesmerized by the grassy wave.
How did I get to this place
Where so much promise lies before me,
Yet believing the best is already behind?
With each step I trample the tender shoots,
Very much like my dreams…
At one time flowing freely
Bending with the wind,
Now ground back into the earth
From which they were born.

Sorrow in the mind
Torments man to his soul
Miserable life
Only if we let it be
Instead of letting it go
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
Blame, cursed blame eats at the soul
Recusing the heart from feeling…loving
Oblivions incessant darkness shadows every breath
Knocking on every door selling its wretched wares
Even goodness recognized is stymied by the gauntlet
Nothing is permitted passage for fear of pain
No one is let beyond the citadel’s ramparts
Entry can not be bought as the heart’s gate is closed
Strangled by pity and destined for loneliness
Sadness ravages because we cannot let go
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
Regretting the past
It cannot be changed once gone
It must be let go
Otherwise it destroys
Leaving sorrow in its wake
~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~
Is it hope or foolishness,
Games of chance,
One more turn of the card,
The next pull of the one armed bandit
Hit me,
Come on–triple sevens,
Changing life forever.
More often than not
The wallet ends lighter,
The heart weeps louder,
The mind is more full of regret,
Maybe next time…
Jackpot!

Beauty fades;
Stripped of color
Under unrelenting sun.
Once vibrant petals
Brown and crumble,
Scattering dust and seed
To the four winds.
A life run its course
Gives birth to the next generation
Through its death in the dawn of spring.
Never regretting,
Never questioning its fate
It gives itself unapologetically
For the propagation of their future.
As with all living things
We are here for a brief time
To live,
To spawn,
To die,
Returning to the earth
From which we came.
A cycle that has repeated itself
For eternity.

My breath floated silently toward Heaven.
I watched as it disappeared
Blending seamlessly with the cloud filled sky.
With upturned collar
I stood with loved ones feeling completely alone;
Such a strange feeling this is.
I had known her for almost fifty years,
But suddenly came to realize…
I scarcely knew her at all.
Self-absorbed with my life, my own family,
Thinking she would always be there
I never thought to ask who she was,
What her life was like,
Even where she born;
It just never occurred to me to ask
And never came up in conversation.
My picture of her had always been the same,
White hair, as white as newly fallen snow,
Her cheek, soft and smooth to the kiss,
Kind and joyful, yet quiet as a mouse;
Always taking a backseat to the love of her life.
Sadly, her time has now passed
Taking with it the story that was her.
I am left to gather up snippets,
Like those tossed on the cutting room floor
Selectively shared second hand.
My chance has passed to hear her story
In the truth that can only come from living it.
No fault can be placed, but on me
So on me alone the fault must lie.
By divine retribution, I stand here,
In the icy chill of winter to bid farewell
To one I loved dearly,
More dearly than she would ever know
And with profound sadness I’ve come to realize
…That I never really knew her at all.

The blink of an eye
Ones life in the scheme of things
Its here and then gone
Wasted due to our own fears
Until we end in regret
This should never be
We were all born to create
Everything we dream
The only shame–not living
Just because we are afraid
.
