It Speaks In Tongues

It speaks in tongues,

Jagged and cruel to the ear.

It gnaws at human flesh, my flesh

Carnivorous and cannibalistic,

Leaving scars deep within.

These scars, the blood I let is unseen,

Yet the tears are real,

Signs of the pain I’ve embraced

As a lover to his love.

O’ the excuses I’ve made

While revelling in my torment.

I’ve chosen not to go on,

To anchor my future to the misery of the past.

You would not have wanted this, I know,

But weakness and loss are all that I have left.

I understand them,

I take comfort in their constancy

Though they devastate my soul.

To love again would be far more than I could bear,

To smile at the new day would dilute me,

Partaking of joy in the joy of another would sacrifice me!

I am unworthy of romance, of passion

With a heart melancholy and corrupted..

Of this I am certain,

Fate whether by God or my own hand

Will haunt me until the day that I die.

Looking Across the Field

Looking across the field

Sun blinding me

I’m in a trance,

Mesmerized by the grassy wave.

How did I get to this place

Where so much promise lies before me,

Yet believing the best is already behind?

With each step I trample the tender shoots,

Very much like my dreams…

At one time flowing freely

Bending with the wind,

Now ground back into the earth

From which they were born.

Sentimentality And Longing

Sentimentality and longing–drowning

In a sea of what was.

Knowing that one can never go back

To childhood,

To before grandma died,

Before the loss of grandpa,

Before any of the idiotic decisions we make

During the folly of our youth and beyond.

The impossibility of this is obvious;

Time only marches forward,

Steady and resolute in its determination.

Leaving us, if we choose to stay,

in the dust and cobwebs of our past.

One must ask, “To what end?”

To be passed…

By opportunities for love,

The love of family,

All the good that life has to offer.

A life of misery,

A life of hoping for what was,

What can never be,

This is the fate of so many.

Living in sorrow, void of hope,

Void of happiness,

Drowning–in sentimentality and longing.

Trapped

Trapped in this chasm, my mind

Constantly looking…

Searching for something only I can provide

Realizing, but still denying the power

Peering into the eyes of friends and strangers

Seeking approval…

Begging for their projection of happiness

Only to be disappointed

Let down by their inability to meet my desires

My need for acceptance,

My need for love,

My need for joy that once staked claim to my soul

But has since blow away

Sailing to parts unknown

As I lay quiet staring at the stark white ceiling

Tears, salty and warm sting my bloodshot eyes

Crying as I’ve done so many nights before

Tomorrows another day

Maybe I’ll find what I am looking for on the other side of the door

Waiting to embrace me

Envelope me

Wash me in the happiness that I so desperately pray for

My need for joy that once staked claim to my soul

But has since blow away

Sailing to parts unknown on the wings of the four winds

As I lay quiet staring at the stark white ceiling

Tears, salty and warm sting my bloodshot eyes

Crying as I’ve done so many nights before

Tomorrows another day

Maybe I’ll find what I am looking for on the other side of the door

This Solitary Tree

This solitary tree,

Utterly alone amongst the brown grasses.

Nary a leaf can I see,

iIgnored by the traveling masses.

~

No birds find cause to seek shelter,

No buds rise to show you love.

Dry and brittle in the noonday swelter,

Limbs raised to Heaven hoping for rain from above.

~

What have you done to be shunned…an outcast,

Sentence too cruel for such an innocent one.

Punishment levied you’d hoped you’d outlast,

With each passing day a new days begun.

~

I look on with sorrow and the shedding of tears,

As I see myself in you, one and the same.

With scarcely a friend after all of these years,

I’ve no one to place, except me with the blame.

~

I too just as you have my soul laid out bare,

A wish for companionship to stay.

Broken and weak I expose to the air,

The longing for love I keep locked away.
