Theater Of Life

Naked and raw
Blasting from the womb like a seedling from its pod
Screaming for the first breath
So begins the amazing campaign
A politician elected to life.

Born out of love or lust
The aftermath which is indistinguishable
Unquenchable contest for sustenance
To triumph is all that is known
Primal urges the impetus to persist.

Adolescence brings arrogance
As maturity is sluggish to prevail over unrefined emotion
Enmity and dispute become commonplace
Tightening the reins like those of an untamed mustang
Welcome, right of passage.

Time quells obstinacy
While Respect replaces contempt
Competition for dominance is no longer primary
Instead wisdom is honored rather than detested
Seeing in age what we hope to become.

Understanding seems second nature
Now seen through the eyes of the aged
What once so obscure, is now clear as crystal
Modeled in the image of those that came before
To live in us as both a blessing and curse.

Son becomes father, daughter becomes mother
The circle enclosed as adolescent morphs into elder
Kindred souls flow like a river never-ceasing
Reproducing life through life’s rushing waters
Simply actors are we in this great play.

Leaving behind those we’ve reared
Progeny that embody what is transcendent
Nature and happenstance will dictate their course
While predecessors move on to nights last voyage
Rhythmically repeating the cycle of life.

Author’s Note: This was the very first poem that I posted on WordPress back on June 30, 2012.  I haven’t read this poem in a very long time and fortunately I still like it.  I thought it might be nice to sprinkle a few pieces into the mix that many of you may not have seen.  I hope that you like them.  Thank you all for the long time support that you have shown me, I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

Absent Though Not Gone

Absent though not gone

A temporary reprieve

Enjoy my silence

Though unlikely to last long

I’ll be back with a vengeance

Time for regrouping

Collecting all of my thoughts

A tidy bundle

Set to explode on the page

For the world at large to see

O’ One of Pure Heart

O’ one of pure heart,

Surely it must be enveloped in resin

Otherwise how can it not break.

Thine voice sings the beauty of angels,

Thine face art most ravishing,

Still how many times hast thou fallen prey to artiface,

How many times hast thou succumbed to frisson in the face of night?

Drawn, art thou to that which promises thee harm

Excluding nothing from thy circuitous journey.

To castigate thee would serve no purpose;

Nay, it would serve only to drive thee to be taciturn.

In this I fear that thou wouldst be lost to me forever.

Therefore I am destined to love thee just as thou art;

Embracing thy peculiarities and thy uniqueness

As endearing and part of thy mesmerizing charm.

O’ one of purest heart,

I shall love thee forever and ever.

I Wonder As I Drive By

I wonder as I drive by and see the warning

“Inmates At Work”,

What did they do to be enslaved?

Permitted to work unhindered by chains,

Supervised by unarmed guards,

Yet still not free to return home after a days work

They are prisoners none-the-less.

I pity them

And pray that this serves as a lesson learned.

Dressed in blaze orange jumpsuits

They are held up as a spectacles, less than human,

Humiliated publicly as part of their punishment.

What was the crime that revoked their freedom

Placing them in the counties charge?

These women…

Most young with full lives ahead of them

Will bear a badge of shame that will haunt them,

Taking away the promise of their futures

Until the day they die.

Having paid for their digression means little

As the weight of incarceration will shadow them all of their days.

Should we not show greater mercy and forgiveness,

Have we not all deviated at one time or another from what is considered just.

I have, of that I am certain, but by luck I remained free.

As a very wise Man once said,

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

I for one have placed my stone firmly on the ground.

Poetry Prompt Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie – Heeding Haiku With Ha: To Feel The Night

Do You Believe In Coincidence

Do you believe in coincidence,

Perhaps in luck

Or do you believe in something from above?

A guardian angel watching unseen,

Keeping an eye on where you go

Leading you on from where you’ve been.

Is this so impossible

In a “Wonderful Life” kind of way?

There are things we don’t know

Since the beginning of time until today.

As strange as it may seem I believe they are real,

This doesn’t need confirmed with the five senses

I can’t explain it, it’s something I feel.

Maybe this is what eternity has defined as trust,

I really don’t know, I can’t be sure.

All I know is that I have to, surely I must,

No other explanation could be the cure.

There are things not of this world that we sense every day,

Defying the best of logic and human science.

Nothing more needs said, nothing more I can say,

In the divine we must put our faith and reliance.
