  • A Step Toward Cliffs Edge

    April 15, 2013

    A step toward cliffs edge;

    Downward falls rock and sand,

    Bouncing, ricocheting off stone walls,

Shear and treacherous in route to their destiny.

    Equilibrium falters on unsure footing,

    Perched high above circling birds,

    An unnatural scene for man.

    Carved by wind and water

    Otherworldly vastness astounds.

Its artist appears a distant ribbon of green-blue

    Winding mesas and chasms ,

Ever chiseling to greater and greater depths,

Slow, deliberate, unnoticed by all but the creator.

    Revealing what is evident to all but fools;

How abruptly the human spirit can be dashed,

    Minimizing our self-aggrandizing achievements.

What feat of man could compare?

    We are but amateurs

    Crawling in hopes to walk,

    Attempting to master the unmasterable,

    Devastating perfection, striving to control.

Can we not just appreciate the grandeur,

The depth and breadth of this– Grand Canyon.

    Spring floats on warm breeze

    Golden rays bronze winters pale

  • A Thirst Consumes

    April 14, 2013

    A thirst consumes me

    One which water cannot quench

    Is there a Heaven

    Is there a hell, I don’t know

    God knows…if he exists

    This question of faith

    To believe or disbelieve

    I struggle alone

For no one can know my mind

    Or the spirit within me

  • The Vultures (A Dark Poem)

    April 13, 2013
    The Vulture
    The Vulture

Those birds, those horrid blood sucking birds

Circling overhead, their red collared necks deep crimson in the setting sun.

Sensing the departure of spirit and will,

Waiting for the living to become lifeless,

    Relishing the coming of death.

What morbid creatures are these, heartless and soulless.

Lying here, is this to be my last vision,

    This hideous species of fowl

Bent of emptying my sockets, disemboweling me,

    A meal for the taking.

Impaled by the prey I so stealthily sought,

    Victim of my own arrogance.

Alone and lonely, shielded in blood soaked clothes

Most certainly this is not the end I envisioned.

    What of my loving wife,

What will become of my children,

    What of?

    They circle…

Lower now, they smell the end is near,

Smell of death is in the air, death is inevitable.

Cold is setting in, the end is close.

Swooping low, these maggots, they torture me,

Flapping of their wings, stench of rotting flesh.

    Daylight is fading,

I am so tired, so cold, so at peace.

    Do what you will my relentless tormentors;

My family will remember me as I was not as I am,

A poor wretch soon to be torn and scattered,

Nothing but a whisper on the four winds.

Take me O’ winged beasts, take me now!

    My time has come,

    …Farewell.

  • Emotions Naked – A Tanka

    April 13, 2013

    Emotions naked

    Crumpled like dirty laundry

    Piled on the floor

    Waiting to be gathered up

    Washed, folded and put away

  • Beauty Surrounds

    April 12, 2013

    Beauty surrounds,

If we only take time to observe.

Caught in the trap of modernity,

Should we not exalt these wonders,

    For the sanctity of nature,

    Is most breathtaking to behold.

Our towering buildings, bridges, fountains, sculptures,

All the great works of the ages do not compare.

    Man’s achievements are but specks,

Mere blemishes woven into this worldly fabric.

The Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the giant redwoods,

the mighty Mississippi, the Rocky Mountains,

Overshadow anything man’s simple mind could envision.

    Yet through our mortal determination

We destroy the masterpiece that sustains us.

    Let us slow down…

Take a moment to appreciate what surrounds us

Before we further damage this gift we have been given

Leaving nothing but ugliness and regret

    To those that will follow.

  • There Is A Thaw

    April 11, 2013

    There is a thaw, too long in the making;

Not just of snow and ice nor lake or window pane,

We are on the cusp of a thawing of ideals.

Like the first breaths of spring,

Fragrant and refreshing after a long brutal winter.

    ~

    What beauty awaits as blossoms,

Every color of the rainbow paints winters bare landscape,

    Each one equally beautiful.

So many had fought and died to see this day,

Sun shining, blue skies, a warming breeze

    Before returning to the earth.

    ~

    You were not forgotten

As successive springs sprout new generations

In the image of those preceding them.

Your loss was not for naught brothers and sisters,

    A hopeful spring has come.

    Spread beyond your garden borders

To mingle amongst the forests and fields.

    ~

  • Time Nurtures Wisdom – A Tanka

    April 11, 2013

    Time nurtures wisdom

In the face of angry barbs

    As youth yields to age

    Imparting knowledge with years

    In place of impulsiveness
