The Sun is Setting

The sun is setting, bathing our fall in the last rays of day.

Still we sleep sound in the quiet of darkness,

Oblivious to what awaits

Even though it has been foretold by sages and fools.

This end will not come with the concussion of a bomb,

It will not be suffered by the bloodletting of a bullet

These would be less painful.

It will come to us by our own greed,

Our ignorance and inhumanity will trounce us,

Look at those that came before,

The great Roman Empire.

Where is it now?

Oh yes it exists in its crumbling ruins,

Disintegrating coins dredged from the bottom of the sea

And legendary despots littering history books.

The sun has set for them yet their kind still exists.

Look no further than America!

This land of so much promise has been duped,

Fooled by its aristocrats and their vast wealth.

They stoke the fires of hatred and prejudice to divide us

Until we become immune to the putrid bile they spew.

They trust that factless propaganda will be trusted,

That we won’t take the time to hold them accountable…

And they are right, we are sheep being lead to slaughter.

What will it take to wake us up from their fear?

We are arrogant and pathological in our policy,

Refusing to take blame for even the smallest thing.

Climate change is real say our climate scientists

Yet we deny it because we aren’t scientists.

ISIS did not sprout out of thin air,

We created it with our insatiable thirst for oil

And the deaths of those we were determined to depose.

Education, social security and Medicare are in danger

Due to their incessant need to privatize and profiteer.

Tell me, what did they do to make you trust blindly?

All they did was tell you whose fault it is,

What group to hate,

That social programs like socialism are evil,

That they will watch your back and protect you

While taking away your civil rights in subtle ways.

Their votes send your jobs away all the while you beg them to help you.

Really what did they give you to vote away your best interest?

Lower taxes, privatization of government services, more free trade and job loses,

The right to openly discriminate against your fellow Americans,

All under the guise of some imagined religious war.

I really don’t understand what has happened,

When we stopped being logical and informed,

When we started believing in the oligarch’s fairytales,

When we became cultists to the media.

All I know is that changes are coming

So be careful what you wish for.

Our Tide In Great Waves Rolls Out

Our tide, in great waves rolls out,

Back to a dark and murky ocean.

So long we have struggled to crawl from the slime

To a place of light and enlightenment in this New World.

Holding up the Statue of Liberty as a sign of hope,

As a sign of our lust for freedom and equality,

We are showered in a torrent of our own hypocrisy.

There are brothers and sisters among us

That still struggle for whole-hearted inclusion.

Cast to the fringes they are ostracized and criticized

For their God-instilled proclivities.

As men, who are we to be judge and jury of our peers,

This was not ordained upon us by the Creator!

Time and again we wander this rocky treacherous road

Seeking to impose man’s prejudices upon men.

Would Christ whom you hold so dear have been this cold,

Tossing his brethren out into the desert?

You dredge up this muck with arrogance under the guise of freedom

Plotting all the time to shackle others for your cause.

Put yourself in your adversaries shoes,

Do they not feel worn out and ragged?

Early in this twenty first century I was optimistic,

Hopeful that common sense and compassion would prevail,

But now I am left disgusted and embarrassed.

Is this what America has devolved into,

A nation of oppression, prejudice and inequality

Based on twisted interpretations of God?

A travesty we have become…indeed!

Gone Are Those Days

Gone are those days

You know…the ones where our children are better off than we are.

What is better for them,

Saddled with debt for an education that guarantees them nothing,

Grown children living with their parents,

Prospects for their futures clouded,

Shadowed by unceasing war?

For many taking up arms for their country the only way to survive

Taking injury and death as necessary risks.

Is this what we wanted for our children,

Is this what our parents had hoped for us?

Where do they go from here in this country divided?

Everything is in turmoil!

The government is polarized,

The people brainwashed by extremist media.

Bankers, the greatest threat as described by our founders

Have slithered their way into our capital’s marble halls.

So much promise has been squandered.

This once great nation is sacrificing its young

And for what, pieces of gold,

A return to a past that has long since died,

Survival of the fittest where the rich become richer

And everyone else becomes irrelevant.

This is not the country I knew and loved,

It is an abomination of the worst kind

Feasting on the bones and blood of our children

To fuel its unquenchable lust and greed.

Our Past Watches

Our past watches modernity from the grave.

Sprawling fields of monument and headstone

Honor these souls that ventured on before us.

What must they think of this world as they look on,

Our never ending roadways,

Towering buildings of glass and steel,

Automobiles supplanting horse and carriage,

Our lack of respect for water, air and life,

Politics more polarizing than any in history,

Unquenchable greed marring its noble past?

Perhaps they are relieved to be in a better place,

Sleeping peacefully under a blanket of white,

Winter’s cold and man’s ignorance

No longer gnawing at their weary bones.

As we pass by should we not think of them,

Consider how far we have traveled,

How far behind we have fallen,

What we have lost,

What we have surrendered in frustration.

If we are to regain our souls,

Our greatness and our compassion,

Reversing this slide into oblivion,

These fields likely hold the key

Under their peaceful blanket of white.

Shock Of All Shocks

Shock of all shocks!, A conclusion has arrived,

What you may ask drove me to this.

I look at this nation and its leaders that drive,

And sadly I find so much amiss.

Squabbling and indecision on the left and the right,

It’s politics at their very worst.

From top to the bottom it’s no easier a fight,

Unable to decide what to do first.

Managing from crisis to crisis is no way to proceed,

As the ball is too easily dropped.

We look to our leaders to stand up and take heed,

Of all that must be started and stopped.

From debt ceiling to healthcare, ebola, ISIS and more,

They fight each other all of the way.

Afraid am I of what may very soon be in store,

For greater horrors may come into play.

We have hearing after hearing and nothing gets done,

They are sound bites for the next campaign.

Fodder for the platform on which they will run,

With lies and aggression to inflame.

I look at the response to ebola with a smile,

This comedy of errors that it is.

The protocols, what protocols all to beguile,

What’s the answer is part of the quiz.

What do we call them–ISIS or Islamic State,

Would somebody make up their mind.

We got into this one perhaps a little too late,

Over time I am sure we will find.

In these two crisis’ congress isn’t without fault,

Ask McCain, he was friend to our foe.

Yelling arm the rebels their advance they will halt,

As always putting on quite a show.

Now congress has called a meeting, the CDC to berate,

For its failure to institute adequate tools.

It was fine leaving West Africa to suffer its fate,

Denying funding like cold hearted fools.

Messages are mixed on all things from above,

Agreeing on nothing is their way.

Failing to compromise when push comes to shove,

I suppose this is how things will stay.

So what is the conclusion from this long winded rant,

More trouble ahead is surely brewing.

Our government is broken and their solutions are scant,

I’m confident they don’t know what they are doing!

What Have We Become

What have we become?

Both sides are fatally flawed.

We–the laughingstocks!

Politics are the cancer

Eating our nation alive.

Are we to perish,

Fading into history

Like Rome’s empire;

Remembered for its grandeur

Through its crumbling ruins?

Perhaps it’s too late,

Our experiment–a dream

May evaporate

Becoming just a footnote

In the annals of mankind.
