Appearance–polished marble

I know far too many people like this. Odd how people think talking about a person behind their back is ‘better’ than saying things to their face. Don’t even get me started on the ‘I’m not *insert -ist*, but . . .’ phrases.
If you have to preface things with “I’m not” then you probably are. It’s funny how that works.
Almost like people think it’s a get out of trouble phrase.
You’ve got that right, but to me it just shows who they really are deep down.
