Could you be trusted,
To do the right thing,
To love thy neighbor,
Be charitable,
Work for the common good,
Protect the weak,
Temper the strong,
Care for the old,
Protect the young,
Heal the sick,
Be kind to all,
Hold your tongue,
Respect opinions,
Treat everyone as equal,
Not tread on another’s path,
Live in peace,
Love?
Could you be trusted,
I think not.
For if you could there would be no need for laws.

I’ve heard several definitions of character. It’s what you do when no one’s looking. It’s also what you do because you want to, not because you have to. This goes hand in hand with trust.

I only “liked” this so I could comment. You are getting paranoid , dude! Stop and think. I do not think the end occurs in our lifetime! I apologise for dissenting with a friend, but an opinion should be stated as such, don’t you think, friend? Throughout history there have been those who prophesy the “end of the world”. Who is the you that cannot be trusted?
Thank you for the comment William. I’m not really paranoid at all. This piece was written with corporations in mind and the corruption in our capitalist system. Were it not for laws, and in my opinion there are not enough of them or strong enough ones on the books with regard to business, these artificial entities would do no good at all in this world voluntarily. They would rape and pillage society to fill their coffers and lay waste to the environment and society. Yes, this can be applied to living breathing people as well, but that wasn’t specifically what I had in mind when I wrote this. As I said, I’m not paranoid at all, I was just stating the facts that would come to fruition were it not for laws. I apologize for being so vague.
Laws beget lawyers and lawyers beget loopholes especially when they help write the laws. Large corporations hire the best lawyers. That is sad! To you, my friend , I wish nothing but the best! Keep your eye out and please help keep me informed. : )

Yes indeed! The lawyers were the citizens protection against unscrupulous corporations and other selfish folk! ; )
Yes they were, but now in many cases they are merely conspirators.
So many truths to this poem… and even with the laws people still do wrong.
