I Gave You My Soul

I gave you my soul

Naked and vulnerable

What was I thinking?

All I wanted was your love

And you crushed me to pieces.

~

Love is what’s sacred

Yet you treat it like folly

And who’s is the victim,

Me…the one you claim to love

The object of your hatred.

~

Maybe I’m the fool

Gullible, the stupid one

Believing in love

Like Shakespeare’s starstruck lovers

And I’m Romeo

Weary Traveler

Weary traveler

T’is this life not a struggle?

Do not thy heart lose,

Greatness surely awaits you

In this world or the next.

Weep not for this life!

In thy pain character’s built

Giving you great strength.

With certainty thou shalt rise

By the loving hand of God.

Could You Be Trusted

Could you be trusted,

To do the right thing,

To love thy neighbor,

Be charitable,

Work for the common good,

Protect the weak,

Temper the strong,

Care for the old,

Protect the young,

Heal the sick,

Be kind to all,

Hold your tongue,

Respect opinions,

Treat everyone as equal,

Not tread on another’s path,

Live in peace,

Love?

Could you be trusted,

I think not.

For if you could there would be no need for laws.

She sees what I can’t

Knowing what I only sensed

My life’s destiny

Revealed by a mystics eye

An intuitive minds lens

Far and Wide, Far Beyond Horizons I’ve Looked

Far and wide, far beyond horizons I’ve looked,

Looked…looked until I glared at nothingness.

Staring straight into the gruesomeness of its face

It manages nothing but a hideous, jagged smile,

A chuckle from deep within its bowels born of hell.

I…what could I, a miserable wretch possibly do?

I am afraid, frightened of what I cannot see.

This monster is not deterred, I can feel its presence

Looming large over me, clawing at my sanity.

I can feel its steaming breath, hot at my throat;

Pulse racing, heart pounding, I tremble losing control.

Grasping the Book I raise it skyward

Screaming, crying, falling to my blackened knees.

Prostrate and bruised for a response, I wait

Yet there is none, no answer, nothing but silence.

Silence and nothingness are all that greet my tears.

I despise this hollow, sorrowful, lonely quest

Plagued with questions thicker than a locust’s swarm.

Nary an answer have I been offered all these years.

Appeasement through words written in an aged text,

My only comfort, based on a promise given in antiquity

I suppose this…this solemn promise alone,

Is the gift offered through

…Faith.

Do You Believe In Coincidence

Do you believe in coincidence,

Perhaps in luck

Or do you believe in something from above?

A guardian angel watching unseen,

Keeping an eye on where you go

Leading you on from where you’ve been.

Is this so impossible

In a “Wonderful Life” kind of way?

There are things we don’t know

Since the beginning of time until today.

As strange as it may seem I believe they are real,

This doesn’t need confirmed with the five senses

I can’t explain it, it’s something I feel.

Maybe this is what eternity has defined as trust,

I really don’t know, I can’t be sure.

All I know is that I have to, surely I must,

No other explanation could be the cure.

There are things not of this world that we sense every day,

Defying the best of logic and human science.

Nothing more needs said, nothing more I can say,

In the divine we must put our faith and reliance.

There–At The Wheel

There–at the wheel of the car that sat behind me,

It isn’t so much what I could here, but more of what I could see.

.

Hands were thrashing back and forth waving to and fro,

Your anger I could feel, I didn’t have to know.

.

Showing teeth, your lips were curled like a rabid dog,

You seemed to be unaware as if enveloped in fog.

.

No, I cannot read ones lips though I surely sensed your rage,

Your act was more attuned to an actor taking stage.

.

I can only imagine what you said, “I can’t believe you cheated”,

Words been said a million times and millions more repeated.

.

Awkward silence is my guess on the other end of the line,

She probably ignored “Working late” and other telltale signs.

.

Placing blame is not my point as love is based on trust,

One her partner clearly breached is my only thrust.

.

Though I could not hear her call I felt her silent pain,

My story of the jilted spouse driving the right-hand lane.

We Drink Because We’re Poets — Poetry Prompt #5 – The Ear

.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:  I took some liberties with this prompt as I don’t often pay attention to others conversations, probably because my hearing is not all that great.  Instead I used an incident that I saw as I was driving back to my office from a job about 3 weeks ago.  There was a woman in the car behind me (driving), angrily waving her arms and clearly screaming into her cell phone.  I used my imagination to come up with the story behind her her obvious rage.
