What Drives Man

What drives man?

Greed, honor, sadness, love, anger, jealousy.

What drives man to madness?

The very same greed, honor, sadness, love, anger, jealousy.

Excuses for the evil that we do

Yet inexcusable by all accounts.

Innocence taken for causes only known to them.

Lives shattered!

Pain inflicted!

Sadness instilled!

No cause justifies their cowardice!

Their selfishness!

Their God complex!

These are criminals deserving of punishment,

Harsh and swift,

Showing no mercy,

For deeds done of their own free will.

  1. I agree with WB. I read this a few times, each time i felt more emotion. It is kinda like the fact that love and hate are so intertwined – where does the separation actually take place? To feel all of these so passionately that somewhere along the line a person loses sight of the good and it gets twisted into something so heinous? Yes, only that person truly knows – or maybe they really do not – compelled by some force within that they cannot harness.

This is a great piece Dom – an awesome poem to stimulate a discussion!

    • Thank you very much for the comment. I am always surprised when a poem that I really wasn’t sure was very good turns out to be so well liked, even if it is about such a despicable topic. There may not be much of a separation between love and hate, I think that there is just a mental justification that consumes the person allowing them to carry out their acts. Once this justification occurs their ability to recognize right and wrong gets reversed and now no matter what they do they think they are in the right. I am so glad that you liked it
