Another year, add one more to the count.
Another tick mark on the chalkboard.
Another chance to get it right.
Another promise to myself to change.
Another negative thing I will give up.
Another positive thing I will nurture.
Another countdown to another list.
Another resolution that I didn’t complete.
Another year of self-flagellation for failures.
Another…Another…Another;
And for what,
So we can feel bad about ourselves,
So we can blame ourselves for our misgivings,
So we can complain of being wronged,
So we can blame others for our failures,
So we can make another list,
So we can fill it with resolutions,
So we can obsess about the negative,
So we can minimize the positive,
So we can set ourselves up to achieve more of the same.
Why do we not love who we are,
Work on changing the things we can change
Take responsibility for ourselves without pressure or demand
Strive to realize our dreams every day
Instead of tormenting ourselves
–Every first of January.

I wish you a Happy New Year as well and thank you so much for all of the support you have given me, I am truly thankful. :)

I wish you the same my friend, I certainly will do all that is in my power to make that happen. Happy New Year.
Yea, the importance of striving to realize our dreams
>
It is important yet so many of us fail to try.
I have been trying
What else can one do?
Try until succeed?
Absolutely my friend, that is how life goes. :)
:-)
‘Why do we not love who we are’ is a powerful question. Always hard to answer too.
Yes it is my friend. We always seem to want to be like someone else never being satisfied with who we are, its kind of a shame.
I think we also have those that try to turn us into what they think is right. It gets confusing especially for the first third of one’s life.
Absolutely. That is is the way it has always been, but I think there is something to be said for allowing people to develop into who they were meant to be, with guidance to know right from wrong from their parents of course. Our culture tends to steer its young into professions that will maximize their income as opposed to providing a lifetime of happiness, as the saying goes, “money isn’t everything”.
I wish more people realized that money isn’t everything.
Sorry for the very…very late reply, but I find that as I get older this is more true, happiness does not necessarily come in the form of money. I hope you had a safe and Happy New Year.
It was rather uneventful. I keep forgetting it is a new year until I look at a calendar.
Mine was very quite and uneventful as well. I watched the ball drop in Time Square at 10 pm Arizona time and went to bed. I figured the New Year would arrive with or without me so why not get some sleep.
Totally forgot about the ball. Watched a movie, saw it was midnight, said happy new year, and went to bed.
Well you did better than me, I had gotten up at 4:30 am New Year’s eve morning and just couldn’t make it. I don’t really find it all that big a deal anyway, never did.
I napped during the day, but only to make sure I made it through the movie.
Smart move on your part, I wish I had gotten to take a nap, but it was not to be.
All the best to you & yours for 2014! :)
Although belated, I wish you and yours a very Happy New Year my friend.
Love all your poems but I’m sure this one hit a nerve in many…
Thank you very much, its something that I feel pretty much every year like many other people I’m sure.
