Spring–Rustling of Leaves (Haiku)

Spring–rustling of leaves

Birds chirping in unknown trees

~~ A beautiful song

Birth is All Around Us

Birth is all around us;

In everything,

Every blade of grass,

Chirp of baby birds newly hatched,

Tiny flowers submitting to their nature to be fruit,

The covey of quail scurrying single file,

Rise of the sun upon a new day,

Winter welcoming the spring,

Barren branches bursting with cool green leaves,

April rains coaxing wildflowers from nothing,

Parks full of strollers and carriages,

Toddlers laughter filling the air,

Earth and sky warming.

Birth is all around us,

In everything,

Wondrous!

Summer’s Unnoticed (Haiku)

Summer’s unnoticed

As it chokes spring–no mercy

~~ Mercury rising

Warm Are The Subtle Winds That Steer Me On (Sonnet)

Warm are the subtle winds that steer me on,

Nary a cloud sails across the sky sea of crystal blue.

The scent of Palo Verde and Mesquite wave winter gone,

Hummingbirds flutter in search of their sugary brew.

~

Noonday sun turns pale and naked skin to tan,

While grass awakens, springing back to a deep cool green.

Scorching heat does rise from barren desert sand,

As lightning quick geckos scurry hoping not to be seen.

~

Return it does to life this arid sometimes hellish land,

Though the living most often desire not to be found.

Spending their time on the cooler nighttime sands,

Sheltered from the blazing sun in their holes underground.

~

A mysterious lifeless land though the desert seems to be,

Much in common does it have with the depths of the worlds deepest seas.

Warm Spring Winds (Haiku)

Warm spring winds blowing
Laugh in Old Man Winter’s face

Encircled In Autumn

Encircled in Autumns chilling grasp,

Warmth of tea cup in my hands I clasp.

Just cool enough for a sweater in evening,

No animosity toward Summers most abrupt leaving.

Crunch of the leaves and the crisp in the air,

Young and old attitude, devil-may-care.

Breathing in freely a new lease on life,

Renewing loves vows of husband to wife.

Truly beauty exists in the wane of the year,

Another season born, greeted with cheer.

As winter approaches and darkness takes hold,

We all settle in for long months of cold.

Please do not obsess and never you fear,

Take comfort in the arms of those you hold dear.

For this, as surely as winter won’t last,

Time and time again as done in the past.

Daily the sun rises and Spring will return,

A lesson in grade school we all must have learned.

With The Coming Of Summer

With the coming of summer

The years midlife begins in earnest.

Infancy is replaced by the maturity of time,

The dead forgotten to the wake of new life,

No more is there the barrenness of winter.

Cold, gray nakedness gives way to colors multitude,

Death’s pungent odor yields to the fragrance of flora,

Rebirth is complete…for a time.

Youthful fauna take comfort in nature’s bounty

Feeding in gluttonous fervor,

Instinctively knowing it is but momentary,

With the scarcity of later year fast approaching.

What a wondrous gift is nature;

Our lives mimicking her cyclic clock,

Stages of life revealed since time began.

Cool Of Evening

Cool of evening settles

Blades, wicker slowly whirring overhead

It’s hum rhythmic in accompaniment

Crickets chirp softly

Bringing gently waving grass to life

O’ how calming is dusk

Tho’ sweat yet trickles from my brow

As from my tumblers chill

Tropical flavors, fresh mango and papaya

Sooth the scorched palate

Shimmering pools call to me

Beckoning to placate tortured skin

I can scarcely resist this sensual temptation

As the clang of greatly diminished cubes

rattle the bottom of my now empty glass

I succumb to temptation

Shedding heat dampened clothes as if on fire

Plunging headlong into diamond heaven

Refreshed as water streams down my face

Ushering in the chill of summers breeze

Over moistened skin

I am renewed, welcoming vitality

As if reacquainted with an old friend

What more could one desire on a sweltering night

Than to be comforted by cooling breezes,

A walk in the sun

Natures call to blossom

Shoots and buds answer

Birds return from winters rest

A beautiful renewal
