Chips Under the Lamp by Malcolm Teasdale – Monday’s Masterpiece 2 December Prompt – Jem Farmer The Boi Poet

Huddled masses dirty and cold

Tossed in darkness to the foul smelling street.

Has nothing changed since the days of old;

The scuffing and shuffling of leather-worn feet.

Scarcely enough light from streetlamps glow,

They’re hungry with nothing to eat.

The single flame does not any safety show

Any end to this parade they repeat.

Fear thee not for thy faithful friend

Stands by with nary a cry.

His loyalty true never waivers or bends

With allegiance ‘til the day that he dies.

Regardless how hard the hearts turn of man

Take comfort that rewards surely await,

For its all just a part of creations masterplan

And the key through the Pearly Gates.

  1. Poignant and thought-provoking poetry Dom. One thought that keeps hitting my mind is that these days even a bag of chips is beyond the means of some and that is scary – something as basic as fried potatoes is beyond the means of those who need basic foods most

    • Thank you Jeremy, I agree it is truly scary that something as simple as a bag of chips would be beyond anyone’s means. There is too much wealth in this world for anyone to be going hungry, but sadly it is far too common.

      • We have had politicians here say people who are homeless or in extreme poverty make their own destiny – I have been homeless and lived on the streets and no one chooses to do that. Sometimes circumstances are beyond a person’s control and they have no choice but to survive.

      • I feel fortunate that I have never had that happen to me or my family, but that does not mean that I am any less sympathetic to the plight of the homeless. I’ve said this before, but like many I see myself as one catastrophe away from this potentially happening and I find it hard to come to grips with. I agree with you, I certainly can’t imagine that anyone would wish to have this happen to them, I find that such a foolish argument.
