Clouding of judgement
By bravery in a bottle
Have another drink
You’ll think you’re invincible
Until the painful morning

Lonely souls drowning
Choking on beer and pretzels
At the local dive
Bartenders smile for tips
Acting like you are best friends
This is your charade
The fantasy that you play
Just for survival
While they’re in it for money
You’re in it for attention

Ladies and Gent at the finest affair,
Linked arm-in-arm with noses in the air.
Paying no mind to the commoner on the street,
Entering the great hall they prepare for a treat.
A show for the ages with music and dance,
They surely wouldn’t miss it given the chance.
Seductive young ladies kicking legs in the air,
Dancing the can-can with nary a care.
The Gents take to whistling, they hoot and they holler,
While the ladies most appalled grab their men by the collars.
Such a circus is this with no animals or tent,
They must on this Sunday go to church and repent.
For now though they’re free to do as they please,
Revelling in the lust of the show as they tease.
Enjoying their sins amongst cigar smoke and booze,
Welcome Ladies and Gents to the Moulin Rouge.

Prompt: Jeremy’s Daily Challenge – Picture This Monday 15 September
War damages more than earth and enemy.
Its scars not always visible disfigure,
Taking more than life and limb.
Those once docile and kind seethe with anger
Tearing family, home and heart to shreds.
Longing to coddle the child we once knew
We only serve to alienate.
As a result we remain silent,
Helpless against the inner demons that torment.
We pray they make it back home in one piece,
Yet coming to terms with that which we cannot see
…There is now way to prepare for.

Drinking dulls the pain,
Feeding the same worn excuse,
Permitting abuse,
Damaging family and friends,
Leaving no external scars.
Yet wounds just as real
Bleed, becoming infected,
Contagious with time,
Perpetuating sickness
For generations to come.

Do not take pleasure
In the loss of two young souls.
Families tattered,
The victim forever changed,
Innocence left smoldering,
Trust left in ruins.
Is there no morality?
What happened to right and wrong?
A hollowed culture.
There are no winners this day,
Only losers can remain.
