Cool Air (Haiku)

Cool air on warm skin

The visceral mood of fall

Summer has been slain

Shortened Days

Shortened days loom large

Precursor to winters gale

Like mortality

Calling summer to the womb

To await next year’s rebirth

Summer Nights – A Kyrielle

 Summer nights in sweltering heat.

Crickets chirp ne’er miss a beat.

Cheerful song, devil-may-care.

Like a knife cuts stagnant air.

~

Ribbit goes the frog in pond.

Male to female they both respond.

Spawning tadpole the two a pair.

Like a knife cuts stagnant air.

~

Heat of night does not deter.

Frog and cricket both concur.

Beautiful songs they both do share.

Like a knife cuts stagnant air.

Siesta – A Tanka

Wind through cottonwoods

Rustling on summers breeze

Green against blue sky

Giving shade from noonday sun

Time for a long siesta

Molten Pavement – A Tanka

Black molten pavement

Heat waves rising toward heaven

Obscuring vision

A long road trip to nowhere

Destination has no name

With The Coming Of Summer

With the coming of summer

The years midlife begins in earnest.

Infancy is replaced by the maturity of time,

The dead forgotten to the wake of new life,

No more is there the barrenness of winter.

Cold, gray nakedness gives way to colors multitude,

Death’s pungent odor yields to the fragrance of flora,

Rebirth is complete…for a time.

Youthful fauna take comfort in nature’s bounty

Feeding in gluttonous fervor,

Instinctively knowing it is but momentary,

With the scarcity of later year fast approaching.

What a wondrous gift is nature;

Our lives mimicking her cyclic clock,

Stages of life revealed since time began.

In Memorial – A Tanka

Barbecues and beer

Welcoming a new summer

We’ve lost it’s meaning

Those who have died…forgotten

Gone is the memorial

Cool Of Evening

Cool of evening settles

Blades, wicker slowly whirring overhead

It’s hum rhythmic in accompaniment

Crickets chirp softly

Bringing gently waving grass to life

O’ how calming is dusk

Tho’ sweat yet trickles from my brow

As from my tumblers chill

Tropical flavors, fresh mango and papaya

Sooth the scorched palate

Shimmering pools call to me

Beckoning to placate tortured skin

I can scarcely resist this sensual temptation

As the clang of greatly diminished cubes

rattle the bottom of my now empty glass

I succumb to temptation

Shedding heat dampened clothes as if on fire

Plunging headlong into diamond heaven

Refreshed as water streams down my face

Ushering in the chill of summers breeze

Over moistened skin

I am renewed, welcoming vitality

As if reacquainted with an old friend

What more could one desire on a sweltering night

Than to be comforted by cooling breezes,

A Balmy Wind Blows – A Tanka

A balmy wind blows

Like a lovers gentle breath

On skin warm and moist

Greeting eminent summer

As a returning hero

Sun filled days await

As spring arrives in birds song

Dew replaces frost
