Staring heavenward
Praying for profound answers
I was the answer
They were in me all along
Had I taken time to look

Staring heavenward
Praying for profound answers
I was the answer
They were in me all along
Had I taken time to look

The unexpected
Colors the dull hues of life
Like the painters brush
Morphing the starkest canvas
Into a virile art work

Tyrants iron fists
Slaughter the innocent
Void of all remorse
Those they were charged to protect
Prey for evil predators

Stuck in a rut, a ditch,
Then again, maybe a canyon.
I yell and my words return
Echo after echo, a ricochet.
Each time I try to find my voice,
It rebounds a fainter rendering of itself.
Reminiscent of a story,
One told ad nauseam until it is no longer heard.
Story after story,
Poem after poem,
Groundhog day.
Where does the voice hide?
How does it break out of it’s own mediocrity?
It calls in hushed tones,
Knocks at the threshold waiting to be let in,
Though somehow I’m too late to answer.
So I wait, peering through the peephole,
For the sound of my voice,
To knock on the door again,
This time I’m ready.

Cloudless brilliant sky
A perfect flawless diamond
Another world
Open to infinity
Leading skyward toward heaven
Something desired
Regardless of religion
Though some deny it
If we look deeply within
We realize that it is true

First love of the heart
Naive possibilities
Unrepentant joy
Ignorant of the danger
Until it has been shattered

Dust and cobwebs
Years passed
Forgotten to time
Unassuming vessel
Buried
Garments out of style
Mementos and trinkets
Sharing the tomb
Still life memories
Black, white,
Faded color
Youthful exuberance
Ancestors
Relegated to history
Resurrected
Celluloid
Smiles and hugs
Lasting impressions
Sense of pride
Who we are
Who we were
Who we will be
Simple attic
Dirty and dark
Meaningless to others
Family heirlooms

Uncomfortable skin
Wrapping unknown destiny
Who am I to be
A question answered at death
By looking back at our life
~

We live,
Separate lives together.
Sharing a roof,
A bed.
Lying back to back.
Void of touch,
Good night
Whispered to an old friend,
Settling for the mundane.
Waking hours,
Life lived apart,
Turmoil of the day,
Work, stress, aggravation,
Too tired to talk.
Meals,
Separate ends of the couch,
Silence for company.
Clink of fork and knife,
White noise,
Breaking tense solitude.
Grown apart,
Here for convenience,
Home, cars, bills, children.
Chains,
Anchors to this hell,
Repetitive, repulsive, depressing,
Loneliness consumes,
Leaving no way out,
Stuck,
In separate lives…
Together.
