Unusual For Its Heavenly Glory

Unusual for its heavenly glory,

A simple yet wondrous beam of light;

All colors of the spectrum shining bright.

I would have thought it a rainbow,

But for my own eyes.

Sun outlined in a thin veil of clouds–

It could not be restrained

Spilling its multicolored hues upon the earth;

A perfect column leading straight to heaven.

Mesmerized, I gazed open mouthed,

Would I have perceived this prior,

In my haste would I have been as if blind?

Beauties claim is not staked by the material alone,

This I’ve come to realize.

I’ve opened my eyes,

I’ve opened my ears,

I’ve opened my mind,

And was astonished by the effervescent world…

That surrounds me.

I Feel Different These Past Few Days

I feel different these past few days, wrapped in joy

Tolerance I found where before there was none.

At first I thought, perhaps this was a ploy,

That is until the other changes had begun.

.

Anxiety and jealousy seem much more subdued,

A struggle I’ve struggled with all of my years.

These issues I’d gnash on as if they were food,

Were simply alternatives to facing my fears.

.

Patiences I lost as I grew out of my youth,

Seem to be returning and rearing their heads.

All because I found what I believe is the truth,

Trepidations settle as my old skin is shed.

.

I think what I’ve found is the beginning of peace,

Not the kind that we show towards our fellow men.

No–the kind that’s achieved as our inner turmoils fleeced,

May I never return to that troubled place again.

PROMPT: Mood

By We Drink Because We’re Poets – Poetry Prompt #1

Snow Falls–Pure

Snow falls–pure, floating silent on the breath of angels,

Soothing the harsh reality of winters abrasive chill.

We long for the newness of spring, but it cannot be;

Buds cannot blossom without the falling of seed.

Though the pain of withering seems eternal, it is, but life–

Reminding us that we will be called back to whence we came,

Back to the earth, back to the soil that nourished us,

Back to its enveloping arms for everlasting rest.

To those that remain, this offers little comfort.

A void is left that no other can fill,

Instead its life is to serve as a constant reminder–

A living testament to those that came before and are no longer here,

Exuding the beauty and goodness inherited through time.

Though their delicate flower, has sacrificed its petals to the wind

And their stems have crumbled to dust;

Their image remains forever embedded in memory,

Never forgotten–often replicated in their honor.

Just as the lowly flower, we are left to serve as reminders,

Reminders of the harshness of our own winter, that takes;

Yet still it welcomes the beauty of spring with open arms.

Though tainted with elements of sadness,

Spring does promise hope, hope in the joy of birth,

Joy in the remembrance of those departed,

Joy in the love shared, the warm kisses on the cheek,

The hugs, the laughter, the kindest of words;

Joy in having had the pleasure of knowing and being known,

Loving and being loved, cherishing and being cherished.

What greater honor is there in this momentary world?

I can think of none, nor would I trade them for another.

With longing and sorrow we say goodbye to one so loved,

Though our separation is as brief as our living.

We will reunite one day beyond this earth

Shedding this body and freeing our spirit as if no time at all had passed.

Placing our souls into the gentle hands of the Creator,

We take comfort that we will be cared for and cherished in Heaven

Just as we were cared for and cherished in life.

Say not farewell, for farewell tenders nothing but sadness and permanence,

“Until we meet again” seems much more apt

Be firm in the knowledge that we will…”meet again”

In a place of beauty amongst those that we have loved,

Never again to be parted.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: I was asked to speak at my grandmother’s funeral a few days ago and had written a couple of poems that I thought I might read to honor her memory.  This is the one that I did not read, but I hope that you will enjoy it.

The Pregnant Sky (Haiku)

The pregnant sky falls

Bringing evening into the world

Looking to Others (Tanka)

Looking to others
Many go seeking their joy
Never finding it
Because it was never lost
It was in them all along

The Chances We Took

The chances we took

Gave excitement to our lives

Without second thought.

This was more than we had hoped

Yet not as much as wanted.

Is this so unusual

As we strive for happiness

Seeking fulfillment

Among an uncertain life?

Is there any greater joy?

Thoughts of Correctness (Sonnet)

Thoughts of correctness–political or otherwise rise this time of year,

Merry Christmas replaced by Happy Holidays so as not to offend.

Is this not still Christmas which we for so long held dear,

There has been no change in the calendar I do portend.

.

What–pray tell is of such offense during this season so joyous,

Are not both happiness and goodwill the same amongst all?

Making merry at this time was once so pleasant–boisterous;

Kind smiles and hearty handshakes have suffered in pall.

.

Abstain if you must, from this merriment we freely offer,

Wallow in self-pity and become victim to your social demise.

There is far more to Christmas than filling retailers coffers,

Its a chance to renew our faith in man with a clearer set of eyes.

.

Regardless of religion take from this holiday what you will,

For if nothing but kindness and generosity, then your heart it will fill.

I Found Myself Staring

I found myself staring,

Looking into a forest of festive lights;

Twinkling–red, green, blue, white.

The cold was forgotten,

Replaced by warmth and peace.

When I awoke…

Standing as a statue

Dusk seemed brighter,

It’s colors more vibrant,

A sense of joy filled my heart.

I was bathed in the spirit,

A renewed man.

Heartfelt Forgiveness (Tanka)

Heartfelt forgiveness
Should be our aspiration
Not just empty words
The lesson passed before us
I hope we weren’t distracted

Are We Not Called to Greatness

Are we not called to greatness

As our primal spirit demands

Promised to all but the faithless

The future is in our hands

Before our eyes destiny unfolds

As beckoned by our will

In our minds and hearts and souls

Its progress won’t be stilled

So if we journey deep within

To the place where essence lives

Returning to where creation begins

Finding peace the universe gives
