Gravity defied
As silver birds reach the skies
Takeoffs and landings
If man’s truly meant to fly
He would sprout feathers and wings

A life spent looking
How will we know when we’re there
I’m really not sure
We can’t see our destiny
I guess that’s part of the fun

I am not a wise man,
Questions–I have so many,
A seeker am I.
No–this is not a complaint.
My path is profoundly worn,
Worn by ancestors
All belonging to my tribe,
My brother humans.
Neither the first nor the last;
Others will travel this road
Leaving blood and sweat
As markers of their journey…
Of this I am sure.
I take solace in this fact
That I’ve not ventured alone.

Modern Magellan,
O’ how I wish to explore
Beyond my country.
Sheltered by America,
I long to breach its borders.
There is so much more,
More than our brief history,
Our moment in time.
The lands of our ancestors
There–just a voyage away
…Maybe someday.

Lonely hotel room,
Faded carpet,
Trust in clean sheets,.
Looking out from high above,
Cracked blacktop parking-lot,
Peeling dumpster,
Weary travelers rental cars,
I wonder why I am here.
Long-distance calls from home
Offer little respite from my angst,
“I love you’s”, across the airwaves,
Still alone with my glowing companion,
Unable to sleep,
Strange bed holds no warmth.
All this, another spin on the wheel,
All this for sustenance,
I wonder at what cost.
Strain on spouse,
Toll on children,
One parent household,
Each trip will be the last.
Until the next time,
Addicted to the golden ring.

Never having left the house
Imagination
Running wild through the pages
Each chapter an adventure

Black molten pavement
Heat waves rising toward heaven
Obscuring vision
A long road trip to nowhere
Destination has no name

Travel to cliffs of Scotland tall
Ancient cities with golden scroll
Coliseum of wonder your columns fall
Time, wind and rain have taken their toll

Fairytale lands with walkways of gold
Rabbits, a queen and Mad Hatters
Through Grimm and Poe the stories unfold
Whether Jack and his beanstalk does itt matter

Absorbed in Whitman’s Leaves of Grass
A cup of tea with Sherlock Holmes
Or Steinbeck’s exquisite Grapes of Wrath
When a Tree Grows in Brooklyn you’re never alone

Traveling around the world in 80 days
Digging treasure on an island deserted
Meeting the end in Moby Dick’s’ way
Though Scrooge’s demise is diverted

Dumas’ Musketeers are dashing them all
A letter of scarlet emblazoned
The howl of the wolf in the wild was called
Romeo and Juliet still amazes

The beauty of words in fiction, poem or prose
Allows travel to faraway lands
Mystery, adventure or as love stories show
The pricelessness of books in the hand
