Looking Through The Haze

The Dove - Alex Alemany

The Dove – Alex Alemany

Looking through the haze toward distant shores,

She knows that her love is here no more.

“Lost at sea” the cable said,

Whereabouts unknown they presumed him dead,

But nothing on earth or in heaven can quell,

Her hope against hope it was wrong what they tell.

Still the solitary dove of the purest of white,

Could not quench her anguish as day turned to night.

With palm against pane her pain tore too much,

At the strings of her heart he could no longer touch.

Then a tear weaved its way down her fair tender cheek,

As the knot in her throat silenced her effort to speak.

All she could do was weep for him that was lost,

Ne’er to give up no matter the cost.

She promised him her love forever and all time,

To him and him alone his memory enshrined.

Finality of Life (Sonnet)

Finality of life remains elusive to the young,

No concept do they have of how fleeting is time.

We all had our anthems that as teens we had sung

Shouting out defiance in verse and in rhyme.

.

Then age ushers wisdom and illusion fades away

Leaving reality as a cold and harsh fact.

We realize that living must be lived for today

For tomorrow is for fools who will never act.

.

Maybe the young had the idea all along

To live fearless and only for the day.

Never considering what was right or wrong

Instead choosing to do things their own way.

.

Now as our ends draw ever near, we realize what little time we are here,

Do today whatever you can, do not postpone out of shyness or fear.

Our Hearts Fade to Black (Tanka)

Our hearts fade to black

When compromised by a love

Leaving them broken

This isn’t by our design

But by our God given flaws

Today – A Ghazal

O’ my love, why must I suffer this hell today.

Like so many days before, I fell today.

.

I’m trying to move on, but my heart won’t allow,

It’s afraid I’ll forget you if I quell today.

.

Your passing lives on in my blood and my bones,

Like a mystic potion I’m under it’s spell today.

.

Without you my sweet I am no longer whole,

Subsisting as nothing but a broken shell today.

.

Tonight I will drop to my knees and I’ll pray

That pain can be confined to it’s cell today.

.

Through tears in my eyes, for comfort I look.

There is no one to whom I can tell today.

.

So with a heart that is heavy Dom must wish you goodnight,

I’ll bid you adieu and farewell today.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: I have to say that this is the toughest poetic form that I have tried to date.  It requires a great deal of forethought to have it make sense and yet I still am not sure if I succeeded.  If you want to give a new form a try, this might be the one to put you to the test.  It certainly tested me.

.
FORM: Ghazal – (Pronunciation: “guzzle”) Originally an Arabic verse form dealing with loss and romantic love, medieval Persian poets embraced the ghazal, eventually making it their own. Consisting of syntactically and grammatically complete couplets, the form also has an intricate rhyme scheme. Each couplet ends on the same word or phrase (the radif), and is preceded by the couplet’s rhyming word (the qafia, which appears twice in the first couplet). The last couplet includes a proper name, often of the poet’s. In the Persian tradition, each couplet was of the same meter and length, and the subject matter included both erotic longing and religious belief or mysticism.

A Decade Of War

A decade of war

Life draining on this nation

When will it all end

Our citizens sacrificed

Precious resources squandered

To what victory

How do we define success

Against painful loss

Our wars produce no winners

Without a clear enemy

All gains will revert

When finally we depart

Chaos ensuing

As is always the result

In the absence of brute force

When ideals are forced

Democracy imposed

Only breeds contempt

When masses are unprepared

For freedoms sacrifices

Cherish the Time

By D. R. DiFrancesco

~~~
Treasure the time had with those you have lost
For we can never know when it will end
Will we be here tomorrow
Will we see the sunrise
Will we see the sunset
Only God in Heaven knows our fate
Draw close, those you hold so dear
Hug them and kiss them and tell them that you love them
For regrets are most damaging to the soul
The past is in the past
Time gone, is gone never to return
Let good memories be of comfort to you
We pray that sadness will not be your constant companion
Live on for them
Thrive for them
Keep their spirit alive through you
Know that they are with you, watching over you
Smiling upon you in everything that you do
Take solace in knowing that they love you
For one day your spirits will reunite in the heavens
I Should Have Listened
By D. R. DiFrancesco
~~~~

~~~~
They are only things,
Temporary and replaceable trinkets,
Their loss, of course stings,
But at the time you could not think it.
 ~~
They asked you to leave and not look back,
Refusing, you took your life in your hands,
While Sandy bore down on your homes and your shacks.
Threatening to bury you in water and sand.
 ~~
Stubborn you claim, “ I’ve been through this before”,
I made it once, I made twice, I can make it again,
But Sandy is not like any of those other girls they implore,
She’s reckless, she’s deadly, she’s a ten out of ten.
 ~~
You know better than they do,
She can’t take what is yours,
Until the trees fell and the waves grew,
You tried to batten your windows and doors.
 ~~
The winds whipped and the rains fell,
Now your house has gone dark,
There’s no one to call, there’s no one to tell,
A loud bang and the sky is lit up by a transformers spark.
 ~~
A tear falls and your heart begins to race,
Maybe Sandy isn’t like any of the other girls I knew,
I wasn’t afraid of Irene or Katrina I just laughed in their face,
I’m beginning to think that this one played me for the fool.
 ~~
You called for help, but your cries go unheeded,
They told you to get out, you just wouldn’t listen,
Left to ride out the storm ‘til the oceans receded,
Under stress you tremble and sweat begins to glisten.
 ~~
A horrible crash and the doors turn to splinter,
Windows explode shattered glass all around,
Nowhere to hide as the waves rush to enter,
Trapped with no chance to reach higher ground.
 ~~
You struggle to hang on not to drift out to sea,
As your walls crumble down like paper mache,
The surge sucks you out as you lunge for a tree,
Praying to God to live another day.
 ~~
Your tired and weak as your hold begins to slip,
Life flashes like a movie in your minds eye,
Kicking and straining not to lose your wet grip,
Hoping against hope that its not time to die.
 ~~
But your fate it was sealed in that moment of haste,
You had your chance given more than should have been needed,
The lose of your life such a sad and immoral waste,
All for disregard of a message that should have been heeded.
 ~~
We now mourn your loss as a tragedy unforgiving,
At the hands of a lady with the devil in her soul,
You could have been one to go on in life living,
Instead you’re another uptick in Sandy’s death toll.
 ~~
You’re a sad reminder of nature’s great strength,
To be feared and respected in all of it’s glory,
Awesome and powerful while held at arms length,
May your loss be our lesson in this tragic storm story.
Sadly, there are those that do not have an appropriate respect for the power of nature.  Too often these individuals refuse to heed the warnings given to them and the result is not just the loss of their personal property, but the loss of their lives.
I truly mourn those who perished as a result of Hurricane Sandy and hope that somehow those that lost their lives due to their blatant disregard of the warnings serve as a lesson to those who may contemplate similar actions in the future.
I honestly believe that there are no material possessions in this world worth sacrificing ones life for.   I hope and pray for a speedy recovery and return to normalcy for those who are suffering from the wrath of Sandy.  My heart goes out to you all.
The Cruelest Loss
By D. R. DiFrancesco
Words can be kind but you prefered cruel
Thrown like a javelin
Piercing my still beating heart
What angry motives you display
Spewed like a child pouting and juvenile
But you are not a child
Those years are long past
Yet you refused to show restraint
Did I wound you
If so, I beg your pardon, for this was not my intention
Malice is not in my nature
You know this better than anyone
Can you ever forgive me my ignorance
For I know not where I erred
Clairvoyance has always eluded me
As does the cause of our rift
I’ve tried repeatedly to make amends
But my cries go unanswered
We have been confidants for a lifetime
Oh how it pains me that we cannot ford this divide
Yet my hope blossoms
That the hurt can be soothed
Reuniting us once more
