Venom in Wretched Hearts Doth Flow (Sonnet)

Venom in wretched hearts doth flow,

Poisoning the mind, the body, the soul.

Sinking yellowed claws, they refuse to let go,

Dragging us down into blackened hole.

.

Choosing to wallow in pity, our woeful state,

Winding path we refuse to veer.

Preferring to traipse the same abject fate,

As if it were something we held so dear.

.

Nay–this is not how we were created,

With sorrow and fear to guide our way.

This truth could never be overstated,

If we change with the dawn of another day.

.

Pessimism serves none, but the weakest of spirit,

But optimism doth breed success to those that will hear it.

Naivety – A Tanka

Maybe I’m naive

Always looking for the good

Instead of the bad

Pessimism taints the soul

Leaving it to die hollow

Hatred and Violence

I sleep confident I’ve done my best,

Only to wake uncertain.

Insecure in myself,

Insecure in the craziness of this world,

The later feeds ravenously on the other;

Draining optimism as if water from a pond,

Leaving it dry, cracked — until it turns to dust.

Periodic lulls slowly renew my faith in man,

Spirits rise, the pond of optimism refills

Then in one spectacular moment it is gone,

Evaporating into the heavens,

By one stroke of ignorance or violence.

The reasons mystify;

Inexplicable to all but the perpetrators.

What’s to be gained?

Frivolous violence and hatred achieve nothing,

But to instill fear and hate in others otherwise uninclined.

This is not an accomplishment!

It is the perpetuation of discontent.

I bask in sunlight

Seeing hope where others fail

Timeless optimist

The Optimist

Who we are right now,

Will become a shadow,

A flashback to who we are.

We evolve by the second,

We can change who we are in an instant,

Becoming someone reinvented,

Exhibiting new talents,

Changing how we represent ourselves,

Born anew.

The person we had always dreamed we’d be,

All by our thoughts and efforts.

We are who we want to be because we will it,

Making demands on ourselves and our circumstances.

We force the people and things surrounding us to change,

Or we change the people and things around us.

Either way we are reborn.

The person we were yesterday is no more,

Say hello to the contemporary you.

The Optimist – Haiku

Glass half full

~~

In trust we find peace,

Rushing in optimism,

So to bathe in joy.

 ~~

A song in the heart,

Shared with those longing for love,

Betters our world.

~~

Be not critical,

For it suites the pessimist,

Leaving them sour.
