Spirits Suffer Under Winter’s Wrath

Spirits suffer under winter’s wrath,

Testing one’s fortitude to it’s last.

With anger, depression, anxiety and stress,

Leaving our sanity in quite a mess.

One glimpse out the window, on an icy chill

Leaves us with nothing, but time to fill.

Stir-crazy or claustrophobic it matters not,

Being caged as animals, seems an evil plot.

Too dangerous to cross thresholds spiteful path,

Daring us to tempt fate with her frosty laugh.

Those who are bold may chance demise

And look at her face through watery eyes.

Hoping against frostbite or something worse,

That leaves you stiff under Jack Frost’s curse.

So maybe being cooped up isn’t so bad,

Compared to all that you could have had.

Hopefully being stuck with the ones you love

Doesn’t turn out to be such a terrible rub.

Just know that soon this too shall thaw

And leave you more joyful in springtime’s awe.

Chill (Tanka)

Chill…Rustle of trees

Winter is fast approaching

Usher in the dead season

Like the cycle of our lives

One dies another is born

Encircled In Autumn

Encircled in Autumns chilling grasp,

Warmth of tea cup in my hands I clasp.

Just cool enough for a sweater in evening,

No animosity toward Summers most abrupt leaving.

Crunch of the leaves and the crisp in the air,

Young and old attitude, devil-may-care.

Breathing in freely a new lease on life,

Renewing loves vows of husband to wife.

Truly beauty exists in the wane of the year,

Another season born, greeted with cheer.

As winter approaches and darkness takes hold,

We all settle in for long months of cold.

Please do not obsess and never you fear,

Take comfort in the arms of those you hold dear.

For this, as surely as winter won’t last,

Time and time again as done in the past.

Daily the sun rises and Spring will return,

A lesson in grade school we all must have learned.

Shortened Days

Shortened days loom large

Precursor to winters gale

Like mortality

Calling summer to the womb

To await next year’s rebirth

With The Coming Of Summer

With the coming of summer

The years midlife begins in earnest.

Infancy is replaced by the maturity of time,

The dead forgotten to the wake of new life,

No more is there the barrenness of winter.

Cold, gray nakedness gives way to colors multitude,

Death’s pungent odor yields to the fragrance of flora,

Rebirth is complete…for a time.

Youthful fauna take comfort in nature’s bounty

Feeding in gluttonous fervor,

Instinctively knowing it is but momentary,

With the scarcity of later year fast approaching.

What a wondrous gift is nature;

Our lives mimicking her cyclic clock,

Stages of life revealed since time began.

A Winter’s Day

Shafts of golden beam

Carry dust and dreams

Through panes stained

From winds and rain

Warming on a cold winter’s day

Secured from dhill, inside I will stay

A cup of tea in one hand

Envisioning holiday in a warmer land

Comfort in a good book I will read

In these I find all the solace I need

Nothings better on a cold winter day

Than a good book, hot tea and…

                       A mind allowed to stray
