Dry Tears

Dry tears dull her cheeks

No more left has she to cry

All has been taken

Her life, joy and only child

Squandered by a tyrant’s hand

~

Our inaction screams

Falling upon bloody ears

Looking like cowards

We cower in our corner

Pompous in isolation

Our Future – A Tanka

Lay your head down child

Know that you are our future

Your shoulders hunching

Punishment for excesses

We were too weak to curtail

Blinded

Blinded by incessant greed,

You care not how it is acquired.

Crushing the lowly ant beneath designer wingtips

Screams for mercy go unheeded muffled in their death.

Prodded from birth a loss shall not be suffered,

Now so ingrained is it that you know no other way.

Color green, dreams of dollars, pounds, yen, your consummate brides,

You see nothing else, you see no inequity, no poverty.

Devoured by loathing, oblivious to anything but self

You despise those you view as vagrants, leeches, sycophants,

Treating them as rubbish though you know not their stories.

No time do you have for the common good,

Nor anyone or anything but your deepest desire.

Leaving all else to ride the wave of your deadly hate

While you strive to romance your lover…greed.

Progress – A Tanka

Stacks puff their gray smoke

Debris like a beaver’s dam

Fish…belly up float

Stink of capitalism

Passed as unfettered progress

Tired Eyes – A Tanka

Closing tired eyes

Crickets sing their blissful song

Calling me to dream

A tale written just for me

By the artist in my mind

Wisdom

Anger cultivates adversaries

And corrupts the heart and soul.

Intolerance grows like a clinging vine from this poison.

Are we so bold as to think ourselves above another,

The epitome of a self-righteous god?

Enemies will sprout from every dispute if this be true,

Of this I am confident.

Correct thinking and love are our allies,

Understanding  this, is a sign of wisdom.

Emotions Cast Out – A Tanka

Emotions cast out

Like a net upon the sea

Unexpectedly

Take on a life of their own

Spiraling out of control

Simpler Time

To lay in the tall grass

Soaking up summer sun,

I recall a time so much simpler than today,

Carefree, up at dawn, out, exploring,

Seeking out new worlds, new adventures.

Calls for lunch went unheeded,

There just wasn’t the time.

Mother knew, mother always knew

This was part of the plan.

Friends and imagination consumed,

My world for the taking,

King, conqueror, soldier

How I long for those days.

Today kings become tyrants,

Conquerors commit genocide

And soldiers really die.

Games of youth were just silly fun,

There were no consequences,

There was no death, no tyranny.

At the end of the day we’d shake hands,

Smile and run home for dinner,

Dreaming of tomorrow,

Dreaming of our next conquest

From the safety of our beds.

Sitting In Judgement – A Tanka

To sit in judgement

Of what lives in other’s minds

Is best left to God

For without omnipotence

Who am I to throw a stone

~

Anger Taints – A Haiku

Anger taints the mind

Blocking mirrors reflection

Disguised perfection
