Desert Riverbeds (Haiku)

Desert riverbeds
Parched and cracked from summer’s heat
Alive with rain’s breath

Blanket Overhead (Haiku)

Blanket overhead
Gray and low, most menacing
A storm approaches

Though Fall Has Returned Home

Though fall has returned home

The hot summer sun still beats upon my furled brow.

The desert does not take kindly to the change of seasons;

Preferring to redden and blister the flesh ‘til left no recourse,

This has always been her way.

Her bleak landscape sparsely dotted with cacti and scrub brush,

Inhabited by venomous creatures big and small.

Her song is that of the coyote howling for her lost love,

His bones bleached white by the fire, laid waste amongst the sands.

Still even Hell must succumb to God’s will

Though not without fighting ‘til its dying breath,

Taking holiday until it is invited back in three seasons time.

Rains Cascade From The Mountaintop

Rains cascade from the mountaintop

So fluid in its dance of desperation

Tumbling over granite shards

Impregnating the seed of the dormant bride

Soon she will welcome her offspring

Colorful and joyous

Springing from crack and crevice

To play amongst the warmth of the winds

Her groom–

Disappearing ever downward

Seeks slumber in the bed below

Having succumbed to destiny

Coyote and cacti feed from his humble remains

Quenching their arid thirst

Until at once

…He is no more

Sallow Skies Erupt (Haiku)

Sallow skies erupt

Flashes dance in the heavens

Scorching the desert

Glow Of City Lights (Haiku)

Glow of city lights

Flames in the valley below

Concrete paradise

Mushroom Cloud (Haiku)

Mushroom cloud of grey

Tis This Hell On Earth (Tanka)

Tis this hell on earth

The scorching sun, desert sand

Bleaching toughest bone

Helios hath no equal

This alone is his domain

Emperor Sun Reigns (Tanka)

Emperor sun reigns

Sculpting earth to hells vision

Turning flesh to bone

Coronated in heaven

As master of this domain
