Promises Break

Promises break like straw under foot,

Brittle, bending, crumbling under slightest weight,

No longer bound to man’s word.

Instead they are simply words of convenience,

Placating the concerned,

Enveloping those amongst the unconvinced.

Like sheep are these believers,

Led about by their staff laden necks,

Given sustenance just to hush their words.

No longer is honor a cornerstone,

A pillar of trust, as valued as a kings ransom,

Degraded, they are nothing but syllables, hollow and meaningless.

Yes, they may be voiced with a smile,

A handshake if the orator is so moved,

Yet sadly these have become standard props for their theatrics.

When did this happen,

When did the worth of a man become worthless,

When did men cower to pretense?

Maybe always, maybe of recent past, maybe today,

Knowing they are played like the strings of a mandolin,

But unable to reconcile their buffoonery.

One day the blinders may be lifted from impaired eyes,

Revealing the wolf cloaked in statesmen’s fashion,

Only then might shame resurrect us.

Speckled With The Blood Of Lies

Speckled with the blood of lies,

Blindly consumed by your feigned sincerity.

You said you loved me,

Sealing it with a tender kiss,

Only to pierce my lip with your fangs.

The trickle,

Wet and metallic,

Oxidizing on my tongue

Nauseates me to the core.

Sickening,

Sweet,

Irony,

Descriptively you.

Pledging passion and fidelity

Then pillaging my love,

Disemboweling my trust,

Leaving a heartbroken corpse.

Politics and the Electorate – A Tanka

Crawling to the edge

Thirsting for cool crisp water

We find a mirage

Nothing but sand, hot and dry

More lying and corruption

Age of Statesmen – A Tanka

Age of statesmen gone

Left with only empty suits

Like their promises

A wealth of material

But nothing of true substance

~~ D. R. DiFrancesco ~~

Are You Really?

Often said,

Seldom meant.

A hair trigger response,

Blanketing indiscretions small and large,

Nearly meaningless,

Just another five letter word,

‘Til trapped in your web of lies.

Only then is it given weight,

Not because you mean it,

But because you’ve been caught!

…Sorry.

Suffocation – A Tanka

Your blanket of lies

Pulled tightly around my head

Suffocating trust

Killing, what I thought we shared

Sun, moon and the air we breathe

Art of the Lie

Truth flows from the mouths of babes,

Only to be corrupted by maturity.

~~

White lies become bold faced,

Until they can no longer be differentiated.

~~

What is true and what is a lie, who knows

It becomes second nature.

Betrayal

By D. R. DiFrancesco

You promised us forgiveness,

If only we would fight for you.

You promised us everlasting life,

If only we would die for you.

You promised us love and gratitude,

If only we would tithe to you.

You begged us for forgiveness,

If only we would lie for you.

You begged us for compassion,

If only we would turn a blind eye for you.

You begged for our silence,

If only to make our children not speak out against you.

You promise us things which you can not hope to deliver,

You beg us for things which you do not deserve to receive,

All while purportedly speaking in the name of God.

We will not forgive nor accept your hollow promises,

Forgiveness should be asked of your God not of mortal man.

As for your promises,

You do not hold the authority to fulfill them.

Keep them,

For they are not worth the breath you have wasted.
