Value of Time – A Tanka

Time, something finite

Taken for granted by all

‘Till late in one’s life

Then time is held as treasure

More precious than solid gold

The sun bright and warm

Looms over the horizon

Calling dawn to life

Sleep is wiped from weary eyes

A mothers work is ne’er done

For A Pocket Full Of Gold

This world has changed,

Though sometimes not for the better.

Progress coming at an expense,

Sacrificing flesh and blood for profit.

What has happened to our humanity?

Desensitized by corporatism,

We succumb to instant gratification,

In lieu of compassion.

Becoming fools and marionettes,

To the puppet masters.

Lining our pockets with trinkets.

Just to placate out need,

To live another day.

Here Today Gone Tomorrow

Calloused hands cracked and bleeding

Ne’er a chance to heal

Family counting on the sweat of labor

For sustenance

And a roof overhead

Nothing more matters in this world

Molten steel pays the bills

Scalded skin and blisters overtime

And he’ll go it again tomorrow

The mill a second home

Thirty years, a day never missed

But what matter does it make

Pink slips are coming

Jobs moving overseas

Loyalty counts for nothing these days

Just a number easily erased

Profits put ahead of people

Born of cheaper labor in the Far East

Silence over dinner

Uncertainty an unwelcomed guest

Visits every evening

Wifes eyes offer comfort

Hidden deep, she knows there is none

How to go on

Everything lost

Skilled to do little else

Some would call this progress

Another unnamed martyr

Of the corporate machine

Vision in White

Light…blinding as weary eyes struggle to see

A vision from lore, dressed in white

Stands before me with outstretched hand

“Walk with me.”, he whispered

I, incapable of uttering a word,

Am I mute,

Am I stunned to silence

I cannot fathom

As unshod feet touch the naked floor

I place trembling hand– in hand

“Be not afraid.”, spoken with a tender smile

“I’m not.”, escapes from parched lips

Peace washes over me as I shuffle

Lead by the kindly stranger

Toward the light nearer and brighter

I was not afraid– to my surprise

Weariness replaced with joy

I longed to reach our unbeknownst destination

Enveloped in the warmth of the light

My Guide in white became clear

Eyes opened wide

Heaven lay boundlessly before me

I was in the hand of God

Unjustified Criticism – A Tanka

Berated by kin

Castigated by strangers

Who turn a deaf ear

Criticizing without facts

Now who’s the ignorant one

Seeing you struggle

Causes pain beyond belief

Tearing at my heart

Eternal Night

The question eternal,

What lay beyond the infinite night?

I peer Heavenward for the answer,

Pleading for an omnipotent retort,

Never to be realized.

~~

On bended knee,

With hands grasped in prayer,

I have asked for absolution.

Hoping that there is life for me,

Beyond this earthly Hell.

~~

Surely there must be more,

How cruel the joke,

Were Heaven the fodder of fairytales.

This must not be,

I refuse to succumb to disbelief!

~~

This night I will read the Book,

Comforting myself in it’s inspiration,

Denouncing the wickedness of my sins.

By immersion in the prose of Psalm 51,

Praying for the cleansing of my soul.

~~

I will not surrender faith,

To the folly of Satan’s game,

Committing myself to his depths of despair.

Surely this mustn’t be my destiny,

If I am to be a child of the everlasting God.

Good Night – A Tanka

sleep

Last rays of day fade

Ushering in moon and stars

As the nights backdrop

Children long for beds comfort

Warm milk and the sweetest dreams
