Angels And Demons

Angels and Demons

Share in this magical place,

This world of man.

What lies between us and them

Is a thin vail disguised as faith.

The faithless believe

There is no God, no Heaven,

There is no Hell, no darkness,

No Lucifer, no Angels,

No war between good and evil,

But they are just fooling themselves.

Call upon them, will them into the light

And they will surely make their presence known.

Look out your window, read the news,

Remember your best and worst dreams,

You will see the unseen at work.

Deny they exist if you must,

But know they live,

Just beyond the reach…

Of your five mortal senses.

An Eye For An Eye (Senryu)

An eye for an eye

The oldest form of justice

Incubates revenge

~~Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~

War Rages Onward

War rages onward

Violence meets violence

Meets more violence

Do we not see the pattern

Are we blind to the outcome

It is infinite

The result always the same

With flag draped coffins

Is There A Cause

Is there a cause in the name of God worthy of cruelty.

Man seeks ever more horrific ways to slaughter

Proclaiming, “This is the will of God.”

Show me where it is written that this is His command.

It is nothing more than a grab for power,

A subjugation of the populace through a reign of terror…

Your mortal motives impure.

Defend your beheading of the innocent,

Defend your burning of the living for the world to see.

How does this bolster your cause?

All you serve to do is alienate through your merciless violence.

You are looked down upon as animals,

A scourge on the face of this planet to be eradicated.

Lay down your sabres, holster your guns,

Draw down and retreat into the background,

Live in peace.

No further murders need be committed,

If you become silent

And listen to the gentle words of your God.

Young Men And Women Do Volunteer (Nested Landays)

Young men and women do volunteer

To fight for their country to the death, showing no fear

Their orders arrive just as they would

Off they go overseas in the hopes of doing good

Then there’s reality, oh the shock

Our core cultural values, by their ways they do rock

Women are property, used for sex

Sold to the highest bidder, the western mind perplexed

Wanting to react, but told they can’t

They turn a blind eye, though to each other they do rant

Lying in their cots, many tears shed

This war was not what they thought, they have all been misled

Romantic ideas, wars of the past

Live only in the movies there’s no way they could last

War is not romantic, kill and maim

Each victim has a mother and each face has a name

Someones left mourning, crying revenge

Seeking to draw blood, to honor loved ones they avenge

How do pray tell, will this cycle end

When it’s all about oil, our interests they pretend

After a decade, I doubt it will

The military industries haven’t had their fill

When this war ends another will come

Reasoned by our government, just watch and see their fun

Be sure and take my word, more will die

No matter how we complain, no matter how we try

As always, our young will volunteer

Believing propaganda from mongers they will hear

Gung-ho with ideals, noble ‘tis true

Witnessed in commercials they’re the brave, the proud, the few

Til God forbid the time ever comes

You gaze into their eyes, pull the trigger of the gun

From that moment on your life will change

You become a killer, a feeling that must be strange

Hoping that the reasons are pure, true

To live with such an action, the rest of your life through

Mourn for those who died and those alive

They will never be the same no matter how they strive

Mourn this generation raised with war

Think about the reasons, they are poisoned to the core

What kind of legacy will we leave

One that’s draped in death, they are constantly left to grieve

Can this end before it is too late

I pray that it can or destruction will be our fate

NOTE: Origination Afghanistan – a landay has only a few formal properties. Each has twenty-two syllables: nine in the first line, thirteen in the second. The poem ends with the sound “ma” or “na.” Sometimes they rhyme, but more often not. In Pashto, they lilt internally from word to word in a kind of two-line lullaby that belies the sharpness of their content, which is distinctive not only for its beauty, bawdiness, and wit, but also for the piercing ability to articulate a common truth about war, separation, homeland, grief, or love. Within these five main tropes, the couplets express a collective fury, a lament, an earthy joke, a love of home, a longing for the end of separation, a call to arms, all of which frustrate any facile image of a Pashtun woman as nothing but a mute ghost beneath a blue burqa.  The full description and some history of the form can be found at poetryfoundation.org.  I took some liberties with this form as it does not translate perfectly into English.  I did maintain the 9 and 13 syllables per line format, but eliminated the “ma” or “na” ending sound requirement opting instead to rhyme which can occur with this form.

Cold Salt Spray Rains Down

Cold salt spray rains down
Winds like daggers frost the soul
Of hearty sailors
Death may lie on the next swell
On their way to calm waters
Such is their lover
Both cruel and kind on a whim
With no emotion
She is as she’s always been
Nature’s passionate abyss

Winding River, You Are Full Of Stones

Winding river, you are full of stones

Each covered in the blood of hatred.

Claiming to do as God commanded

You are false interpreters of the Word,

Stoning humanity into submission.

Under the guise of love you preach–

Conversion or death your message.

Yet in Heaven your Gods are the same,

Your aggressions on earth intertwined;

Surely there is enough blame for all.

Look! Your Holy texts are riddled with violence,

Deaths of men, women and children– so graphic;

Still you have the gall to point fingers at another!

You hypocrite, you heathen, you betray yourselves!

Each of you should be stoned for your digressions

You perpetrators of hate and death.

None of you are without human frailties,

None of you can claim to be speaking for Almighty God

For that–would be blasphemy,

Yet still you proclaim to know what is in God’s Heart!

Put an end this senseless bloodshed,

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”,

And nary a stone will ever be cast again.

Consternation Kills

Consternation kills;

Turning inward the faint heart,

Swallowing them whole.

Such is the fear mongers goal,

To scare the masses to death.

Played time and again,

Fear worse than reality,

Still we never learn.

There is great strength in numbers

If we’d only stand as one.

I Gathered Stones And Pebbles

I gathered stones and pebbles

For a fortress to build,

Bulwark against the evils of this world.

Having fought them for so long

I am weary, fearing that I have no fight left in me.

My swords I’ve dulled, sharpened and dulled again

Beating back the cruelty and injustices of man

Only to have them retake territory.

This has been the history of our species;

Seek, conquer and destroy our lasting legacy.

So cocooned in my citadel I shall wait,

Quietly, patiently, until the day of reckoning,

Praying for this succession to end.

Terrorists (Acrostic)

They only win if you live in fear

Envisioning terror around every turn

Red, blood red keeps you awake at night

Rendered by the media and the radical’s might

Only you can stem this terrible tide

Ridding the world of their plague that imbibes

Impending doom is what they so desire

Stifling of hope for a future that’s bright

Tell them their end lies in the approaching hour

Standing as one–their fates are most dire
