Rose colored glasses

Distort my view of the world

All for the better

Awakening

Awakening to the first rays of day

Filtered through muddled panes;

Thankful for each cherished breath,

The perfection of the day,

My wife, children, friends, acquaintances,

Those whom I have not yet met,

Perfect in just their existence.

This happiness is born deep within;

It can not be projected on one by another

Nor given as one would tender a gift.

This joy must live of it’s own volition,

In unison with the body temple,

Expelling that which festers melancholy.

Would anyone not choose happiness over misery,

Relaxation over stress, Peace over violence,

Love over hate…I think not.

This ability lies within each of us,

Active or in hibernation;

Only a nudge is necessary to awaken it

Often we bury it under rubble;

Forged from the drama surrounding us.

Though unavoidable,

It must not be permitted to loiter.

Rather it must be cast out as a leper,

Burned at the stake,

Sacrificed to the gods,

Guaranteeing the health of our mind,

Our body

And our spirit.

The Joy Of Children – A Tanka

The joy of children

There’s no greater innocence

In this savage world

Our responsibility

To protect their purity

Naivety – A Tanka

Maybe I’m naive

Always looking for the good

Instead of the bad

Pessimism taints the soul

Leaving it to die hollow

An Interminable Succession

Trapped in an interminable succession,

Love, hate,

Happiness, sadness,

Joy, anger

Tolerant, intolerant,

Fear, confidence,

Belief, disbelief.

This cyclone of existence, bleeds me from the inside,

Every ounce of energy expended to maintain equilibrium.

Ups, downs,

Highs, lows,

Gravitating my emotions in tumultuous ways,

Exhausting my spirit to the soul’s core.

I am left a molten mass,

Raw nerves exposed to open air,

Sensitive to every sensation,

Yet helpless to defend.

I guess I really am human after all.

Warmth of early spring

Rekindles past imprudence

The joys of our youth

Follow Your Dreams – A Tanka

Do not let dreams die

Through bitter words of cowards

Like coming of spring

Nurture the tender young shoots

To reveal their destiny

The Gift – A Tanka

What we forge in life

Only lives on when we share

Like gifts at Christmas

The joy is in the giving

Expecting naught in return

A Very Human Success

I’ve longed for success,

Yet in my lifetime,

Remains elusive,

Each dream rescinds the previous,

Resurrecting new heights to aspire,

Settling for mediocrity would be surrender,

This is the human way,

Should we not instead be yearning for elation,

Our sole reason for being,

Instead of monetary wealth,

Finding happiness in work, love, life,

Treasures that cannot be bought,

Fools believe fulfillment lies in smelted gold,

Gold alone does nothing but poison the soul,

Hollowing out and destroying our hearts,

Becoming a false and idolatrous god,

Blinding us to true and lasting joy,

Perhaps success lies in simple things,

Very human things,

Family,

Friends,

Self.

Love of one’s self must be realized,

For void of this one cannot offer love to another,

Maybe success is already in our grasp,

If we would just be thankful,

No…grateful,

For all that we already possess.

Maybe…

If we were to look inside ourselves,

We would find that we have always been…

Successful.

Greener Grass

This gravel road,

A path oft traveled,

Lane you strode,

As your life unraveled.

~~

Yon horizon so far distant,

Where a better life must lay,

Hurry on forth right this instant,

For the sun will rise on a brighter day.

~~

On yonder side the grass must surely be greener,

As the old time saying goes,

This too passes as ones life becomes leaner,

With far too little to show.

~~

Much too often we chase exaggerated expectations,

When they seem right within our grasp,

‘Til euphoria fades to urgent consternation,

And your prospects they dwindle and lapse.

~~

Life lessons learned are the hardest its true,

As the scars and bruises do prove,

Out of the rubble and ash will rise a new you,

In spirit and nature behoove.

~~

We greet you back home as a most beloved son,

For you needed to find your own way,

This is only the beginning of the journey you’ve begun,

Welcome home for as long as you will stay.
