The Ocean Deep

O’ what wonders lay beneath these tepid seas;

Of crystalline blue feathered with aquamarine.

Taunting a resplendent imagination,

With tales of Ishmael and the whale.

~~

Blinding stares into reflected sun hold no clue,

As the ships bow carves through diamond seas.

Cephalopods appear in trance wielding their terminal octet,

Surely Verne pondered like thoughts in his day.

~~

What fear instills man as he peers into the abyss;

Seemingly bottomless in it’s obsidian depths.

Trembling in rampant rhythm with the ships sway,

O’ the woes that lay at the foot of Davy Jones locker.

~~

Tropical breezes nor Gulf Stream offer even seminal relief,

As dizzying trepidation mixes with the sting of salty spray.

Ah! Land ho would be a welcome idiom,

For desolate seas hold little respite for the sickened soul.

~~

What fires are stoked by the likes of Melville and Verne,

With monsters of the deep once deemed mirage.

O’ the tortuous tales we conceive and do weave,

Threaded with the most sparse of truths.

A Determined Love

Kindred spirit

This love was born of the stars

Others would not hear of it

This destiny was ours

~~

Our two souls conjoined

By Heaven’s sacred bond

Through vows to be coined

In this world and beyond

~~

My treasured love

In sickness and in health

You’ve stood beside and above

Though my life eluded wealth

~~

Surely this love must be true

Were it not you wouldn’t have stayed

Illness put a stain, the cause we never knew

My trust you never betrayed

~~

Love does not abide

In passions fair weather alone

Nor does it strive to hide

From life’s pain and strife when shown

~~

Our love, my love

Is etched in stone to last the ages

Through all the push and shove

We’ve show the fallibility of sages

Divergence

I do not forsake my opinions

Nor do I feel need to come to their defense

I will not erect ramparts to protect them

I will take your barbs

Take the sting of your venom

Take the cuts and bruises

From your razor-sharp sarcasm

This I do with a smile

Biting my tongue

For fear of regrettable retort

Absorbing in silence

Your contrary views

Out of respect for you

Out of a right to form your thesis

As I would expect be offered me

Shocked and dismayed

It was not

This I will shoulder with grace

Never to diminish my love for you

Regardless of our divergence

These are merely words

At times fiery and inflammatory

Still…only words

That will never divide

Are You Really?

Often said,

Seldom meant.

A hair trigger response,

Blanketing indiscretions small and large,

Nearly meaningless,

Just another five letter word,

‘Til trapped in your web of lies.

Only then is it given weight,

Not because you mean it,

But because you’ve been caught!

…Sorry.

Came screaming back to haunt me

As if yesterday

Friends lost on the battlefield

Turn dreams to guilty nightmares

Curiosity, Friend or Foe

At times a troublemaker,

Like the kid up the street,

Always wanting to pick a fight.

Not for any reason really…

Just curious.

Curiosity–

Is it friend or foe?

Yes!

On both counts. Yes!

What discoveries might have been lost?

What cures for disease,

Missions to the moon,

Lost civilizations,

Were it not for man’s insatiable appetite?

But at times our hunger kills the cat.

With chemical warfare,

Nuclear bombs,

And crime.

All because,

We were just…

Curious.

The Finer Things – A Tanka

merlot

A walk on the beach

Sand, wind and sun renew

Like a fine Merlot

Warming one’s heart and one’s soul

While pleasing to the palate

Love in the Rear Window – A Haiku

Rear window sticker

Proclaiming, “I love my wife”

Aren’t you supposed to?

~~ D. R. DiFrancesco

These window stickers that I see all over the place bring a smile to my face.  As the husband in a marriage aren’t you supposed to love your wife?  This seems to be stating the obvious and certainly nothing that you need to advertise on you vehicle.   If it isn’t, then I missed something during my vows.  Is there nothing that we won’t stick on our cars?

This Must Be Paradise

The band playing,

Something Caribbean and acoustic.

Cigarette smoke swirling,

Thick and dreamy,

Like a storm cloud overhead.

Reminiscent of Bogie and Bacall.

Tropical breezes,

Twisted by bamboo fans,

Deliberate spin.

Ice tinkles as it slides to the bottom of the empty glass.

Another scotch,

Single malt on the rocks.

Humidity in the air,

Sweat streams like the gulf tide.

Cotton shirt,

A combination of moisture and salt.

The pattern of the tropics.

Surf sounds,

Rolling gently,

Up the sugar sand shore.

Moon glistening,

Off the albino caps.

Palm fronds,

Softly rustle high overhead,

Breaking the silhouette,

Of the tangerine moon.

There is no place I’d rather be.

Tropical breeze,

Kettle drums,

Smell of the ocean,

And single malt,

Surely this must be…

Heaven on earth.
