The Greatest Wisdom (Tanka)

The greatest wisdom

Is not found in our speaking

But in our silence

Listen to your inner voice

And you may just learn the truth

Close Your Tired Eyes

Close your tired eyes

Quiet your exhausted mind

A surprise awaits

He has been there all along

Since the very day of birth

Too busy to see

He sat back and simply watched

Waiting for the time

Now in your silence he speaks

Hello my child…I Am God

I Listened

I listened, held my breath,

In between the whir of passing cars

I could here the sound of sparrows.

How strange this seemed,

As if I had never heard their song before.

Perhaps my ear has become more finely tuned,

Nay–very unlikely I suppose.

No, it is more likely that I shut up my mind,

Its incessant ramblings over things of little importance

Worries of work, family, responsibilities,

All imposed by me and this cursed ego.

For a brief moment there was blessed silence.

It leaves me thinking,

Had I only stopped sooner

The sparrows angelic song might have never left my ears.

Closed Eyes, I Breathe Deep

Closed eyes, I breathe deep

Exhaling luscious silence

Emptying my mind

Stress of the day fades away

I’m left relaxed and at peace

Is this not heaven

This place buried deep within

That no one can steal

Even this succinct moment

Can resurrect from the gloom

Sit Still And Quiet

Sit still and quiet

Breathe in its luscious silence

Feel it embrace you

Tell me, what does it whisper

Without so much as a word.

Perhaps love is it,

Love for yourself and others.

What you always knew.

Stifled by chaotic noise–

It has finally been freed.

Let it swaddle you!

Do not keep it trapped inside.

It is meant to give;

Not with great expectations,

But with the purest of hearts.

Turbulence Of Day (Haiku)

Turbulence of day
Melds into a peaceful night
Beauty in silence

Do You Fear Silence

Do you fear silence?

Does the absence of voice scare you?

Do you hide behind white noise?

Do you seek shelter in the arms of music?

Do you try to drown it out with television?

What are you afraid of?

Is it that perhaps your inner voice might speak,

That the Divine might make its presence known,

That you might see into the darkest recesses of your soul

Or is it that you might come to realize that there is more out there

Than what our mortal senses reveal.

There is nothing to fear dear one;

Embrace the quiet,

Look within for the answers you seek,

Call upon the Divine for guidance,

Wrap yourself in peace and love

And know that in silence

…There is wisdom.

Erasure (Acrostic)

Erased–blood stains and voices

Roadway washed clean by rain

Anger and outrage quelled

Silenced by media’s waning interest

Under the ground in which he’s buried roots still grow

Racism–spreading like crabgrass

Eviscerating the people of justice.

Skin Prickles

Skin prickles,

Blood boils,

Barbs catch flesh

Tearing bits and pieces.

Words are arrows striking my soul,

Bleeding and angry I cry out.

Why…why does bating frustrate,

I promised it wouldn’t!

It would never be allowed to spoil me,

But it has once again.

Deep breaths, eyes closed, I must let it go,

Regaining my center,

Banishing my anger to the netherlands,

For my own sanity I must forgive

Allowing others to believe as they will.

They too are trying to find their way;

Looking for answers through consensus or conflict.

I must learn to accept this with a smile

Offering them nothing,

But love and silence.

Absent Though Not Gone

Absent though not gone

A temporary reprieve

Enjoy my silence

Though unlikely to last long

I’ll be back with a vengeance

Time for regrouping

Collecting all of my thoughts

A tidy bundle

Set to explode on the page

For the world at large to see
