Alone he sits and cries
Night after night for a home
Scared of the darkness
He is new to this world
A pup looking for a home

A simple jar caked in dust,
Its seal unbroken for many a year,
Left to the unabating chill of its tower cell.
Where did it come from,
Who left it to its lonely existence?
This solitary place of the hardest granite,
Cold and dark, leaves me bathed in anguish.
Was it abandoned for fear of some great chimerical creature,
Some nightmare from ancient mythology?
Perhaps a split tongued, beaked devil thrusting leathery wings?
What mystical secrets might this vessel reserve?
If only it could speak; what mysteries, dark and erratic might it tell?
Tales of knights, sprained, bent and broken in the heat of battle,
Witches, warlocks, sorcerers, bent on destroying its enigma,
Creatures from the pits of hell sent to capture it for Satan’s purposes,
Fair maidens sacrificed in its ultimate defense.
All this buried so long ago in its fortress tomb,
Protected by a simple jar caked in dust.

Prompt Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie – Wordle #7
I entertained the thought of loving you,
But a selfish heart was blind to all except its own conceits.
No time for anyone else,
Nothing but what satisfied its needs.
You offered love,
You offered kindness, compassion and passion,
The fool that I was missed it
Or chose not to see it.
Really–what’s the difference;
Blind is blind,
Ignorance is ignorance,
Splitting hairs is all that it is.
Does it really matter what its called?
You said you were leaving,
Did I try to stop you…
No!
I watched you walk away;
Not one tear in my eye,
Nary an ache in my heart,
Only perhaps a touch of relief for the freedom.
It makes me sick to think about it,
Embarrassed, ashamed.
Years passed and chance reared its head,
You never gave up on me,
Never hated me as I hated myself.
Your love for me remained though I didn’t deserve it.
I was not worthy.
I eventually grew up, throwing aside my childish ways,
Realizing that who stood before me was exactly who I wanted,
Exactly who I wanted to give my love to.
You took me in,
Sheltered me,
Loved me,
Forgave me my insensitivity,
My foolhardiness;
Never reminding me of it..
How can I ever thank you enough for saving me
…From myself

Life! What do you want
Beating me up ‘til I cry
Then knocking me down
Expecting me to thank you
How about if I refuse!

Another month has passed, scurrying out the door,
Rushing in tomorrow like a fire sale at the store.
What does the new offer you that the old one could not,
Nothing I can think of unless there’s something I forgot.
We wish our lives away for what we think is something better,
Until our time runs out wishing we hadn’t treated it as a fetter.
Perhaps slowing down and enjoying all that we’ve been given,
Would be a better way to appreciate this life that we’re living.
Instead of treating “now” as a prison to escape,
Because it isn’t something we can plan, design or shape.
We should wrap it in our arms holding on oh so tight,
Cherishing every moment with all our will, stamina and might.
Knowing the next second will be as precious as the past,
For the very next second may be the one that is our last.
So treasure this latest present no matter how good or how bad,
Because this one is far greater than many others may have had.

Since I really enjoy writing in the haiku and tanka forms I decided to write one haiku and two tankas for the Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie – Heeding Haiku With HA: To Egyptian Mythology Prompt.
~
Anubis (Tanka)
Souls in transition
Under sacred watchful eyes
Do not be afraid
Anubis is guiding you
Into life everlasting
~
Anubis (Haiku)
Fear not the jackal
He is not what he appears
Anubis protects
~
Bastet (Tanka)
Do not fear your death
Bastet protects as armor
Securing your life
You shall not be defeated
By your mortal enemies

The great overseer watches,
Staring down upon the flora and fauna,
Yellow in the face,
Looming large,
Dwarfing all in his path.
Yet enormity is merely size,
It does not reveal his gentleness.
He would not crush the delicate flower,
Nor terrify beasts of the field.
He leaves no trace of where he’s been
Or where he is going when he leaves.
WIth grace and in silence he rises,
Laying his soft light upon all in his charge.
Signaling slumber for those of the day
And sounding his alarm for the nocturnal.
This is his way,
This is how he always has been.
He simply is
…The gentle giant.
