Heart Sings to My Soul (Senryu)

Heart sings to my soul

A song only I can hear

Joyously living

Discarded as trash

Its rough edges worn away

Beauty of sea glass

Grey and Sullen Day

Grey and sullen day

Sun muted by heaven’s cloak

From window chairs view

Birds and bees care little

Refusing to deviate

A glorious show

Playing out on natures stage

Standing ovation

Life In the Present (Haiku)

Life in the present

Perhaps our most precious time

What else do we have

A Rebellious Streak (Senryu)

A rebellious streak

Not such a bad mark to have

Don’t be a robot

Even the Sun Rests

Even the sun rests

Laying down at the end of day

Welcoming the moon

Never have they competed

Each knows its role in nature

When their time is over

They take solace in their work

And a job well done

Perhaps man could learn something

If he just paid attention

Fire Rages Hot

Fire rages hot

Only while there is fuel

Once gone it burns out

Ash left as its only clue

Blown away by gusty winds

I can sympathize

Creativity burns hot

When fed by fuel

But once it is expended

There is nothing left but ash

Fascinating Mind (Tanka)

Fascinating mind

It changes like the weather

First happy then sad

If nothing else it’s fickle

Believing just what it wants

Pondering Things

Pondering things more now than ever

I’m finding out how little I know.

I don’t understand human nature;

Its incessant need for power,

Its unquenchable greed,

Its innate ability to hate,

Its thirst to subjugate others.

Look no farther than the news;

War is spreading at a rapid pace,

Our young men and women are sent to fight,

For what…our freedom?

Only true if freedom flows from a pump.

Their blood is being exchanged for oil,

Sounds criminal unless you are a capitalist.

Poverty is running rampant,

The rich are getting richer

While the middle-class drowns

And the poor are being mowed under.

Our children are sunk into debt

For the privilege of an education.

Education is not a privilege but a right,

Only a fool would think otherwise…

You laugh…

Well then, a fool I must be!

With no where else to turn

We look toward the government,

Corrupt, divisive, they are of no help.

No! Don’t dare pull the party card,

Your blind faith in either cesspool is deplorable.

Don’t think for a second that they care about us,

Most of us don’t have the money to buy that kind of loyalty.

These behemoths only tolerate us because they have to.

Lobbyists and corporations are their real audience

Purchasing the destruction of our environment,

Sending our jobs overseas,

Corralling wealth for the pleasure of the minority

All for the destruction of the majority.

We…are…expendable!

In the end, what do I know?

I know what this country…this world could be,

It wouldn’t take much,

Just a little love,

A little compassion,

A little humanity,

But then…I am a dreamer

Who just realized…

How little I really know.

Looking Across the Field

Looking across the field

Sun blinding me

I’m in a trance,

Mesmerized by the grassy wave.

How did I get to this place

Where so much promise lies before me,

Yet believing the best is already behind?

With each step I trample the tender shoots,

Very much like my dreams…

At one time flowing freely

Bending with the wind,

Now ground back into the earth

From which they were born.
