Sweetness Fills The Air

Sweetness fills the air;

Scent of lilac and jasmine

Infused in my soul.

Like the tenderest embrace

You and I have become one.

Is this not true love,

The truest love known to man;

Eternally bound,

Two star-crossed lovers

Hearts beating in unison?

I say that it is!

Our bond cannot be broken,

Deaths grip holds no sway,

Matters of the heart survive

Beyond this mortal world

And into the next.

Our passions destiny,

Impenetrable;

Is our armor and our strength,

Warding off those who chastise.

I Feel Not So Inspired

I feel not so inspired these days
The drudgery of our existence weighs heavy on me
Our division as a people
Who in times of crisis would unite
No longer seem capable of finding common ground
Certainly those that wish us harm must be in good humor
How foolish we must look
Dressed in our Sunday finest
Preaching…”In God We Trust!”
But trusting in no one but the self
I can do nothing to alter the fact
There is no election to hold
I can scream but no one can hear
Those in guilded monuments are deaf but to themselves
So here I sit with a cup of stale coffee
Choking down the morrning news
Chewing my nails to nubs in nervous anticipation
Only to be swallowed up in disappointment…again
Where are we going
I don’t think anyone knows
Those with the map…they too seem lost
Lost in their maze of arrogance
And we are the ones left in the darkness

A Life of Extravagance (Sonnet)

A life of extravagance looming large;

From gilded palace to jewelled robe.

Shepherd of man has failed his charge,

Faithful bewildered as xenophobe.

You undermine your Pope a spirit most humble,

For luxuries beyond the common man.

While continuing forth to suffer and stumble,

Creating a gluttons promised land.

You have lost all sight of your earthly charge,

Succumbing to frailties supposed immune.

Enshrined in greed and an ego large,

Treating your sheep as courtly buffoons.

Soon before God you will stand for your digression,

Praying to be spared Hell for your foolish obsession.

So Much Blood

So much blood on my hands,

Dried, old, not my own, but mine none-the-less.

Brothers and sisters–I have died with you on the battlefield,

My heart cries with each beat for your lose,

For the sacrifices made over our centuries.

Each of your gravestones is etched with my name,

I am your pallbearer, your namesake, your progeny.

I place the flowers on your graves,

Not for your sake alone, but for mine,

How else could I repay you for your kindness,

Thanks alone seem so hollow.

Brothers and sisters–I love you,

You are in my every thought and prayer,

Take comfort that you will never be forgotten.

Cast Into Shadows

Cast into shadows,

A scourge on society

Like lepers banished.

The downtrodden vilified

Are treated as a burden.

Is this not unfair

Of those in authority

Trusted to do right?

By their own self-interest,

Those that need them most are lost,

Left to their vices

Just to dull the endless pain.

Their cries unanswered

Fade quietly in the night,

‘Til no longer seen or heard.

Our Heritage Gone (Haiku)

Our heritage gone

Bulldozed–some call it progress

Farms sold for profit

A Cold Kiss (Sonnet)

A cold kiss lay frozen on crimson lips

His tears could not thaw her icy chill

Thy soul to sea as fare so many ships

Whose lose pain could never fill

O’ slab, coarse for so delicate a flower

How I wish that I could soften thee

Yet I have it not in my mortal power

Into the hands of God must it be

Fairest maiden how I long to offer thou comfort

Though separated many worlds apart

Couldst I have quenched thy terminable hurt

Nay–sorrow be still my beating heart

.

O’ my dearest Juliet, I am dead to this world without thee

With this bitter nectar reunited soon we shall be

Grand Plans

Grand plans, so many have I had,

Scribbled on scrap paper,

Bled onto soggy bar napkins,

Etched into the walls of my mind

As you, I’m sure have likewise done.

Isn’t this our way?

A human fault, or perhaps a gift depending on one’s perspective.

These dreams, this plan is what makes our time so glorious,

For without these, our finite period would be mundane.

I can not imagine another breath without them.

We must fuel the flames of hope, nurture our deepest desires,

Those that keep us moving forward into every new day,

Isn’t this our way?

Desert Heats Collapse (Tanka)

Desert heats collapse

Banished back to whence it came

The abyss of Hell

Welcome the chill of Heaven

With falls gracious arrival

Brinkmanship of Fools

Brinkmanship of fools

Buffoons clutching at the rope

Game of Tug-O-War

A nation’s demise the prize

For their own self-interest

Not our finest hour

As default edges closer

A vicious cycle

Returned to our beginning

Tyranny and oppression
