Two Simple Words

Two simple words,

Three little letters,

Commanded by God eons ago.

Spoken with respect or not spoken at all.

Blasphemous if taken personally.

Held sacred in the Torah as in the Old Testament.

Otherworldly–

Holy–

Instilling fear in the faithful–

But why?

Are we not made of God,

In the image of God,

Each a Creator in our own right?

As written in first John,

“He who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

So why are we so afraid?

If I am filled with love… am I not love?

And therefore,

If I am love am I not…

I Am?

A Dot On The Map

A dot on the map,

Another town with an odd name,

A place people pass through,

Ignored on their way somewhere else.

This was years ago;

O’ the town is still there,

But gone is its charm.

Gone are the things I loved most about it,

Gone are the wonderful pines

Standing tall next to Beal’s Hardware Store.

Gone is the pure cedar creek,

Gone are the open spaces,

Gone are the mom and pop stores dotting Main Street,

Gone are quaint family owned restaurants,

Gone is Porcellini’s Farm Market and Nursery,

Gone is Armand’s Auto Body,

Gone is Duffy’s Yacht Bar,

Gone is the wildlife preserve,

Gone are the wetlands,

Gone is the egret,

Gone are the scenic views unless you can afford them,

Gone are the commercial fishermen and clammers,

Their way of life is dying.

The pines have been bulldozed for Walmart,

Beal’s shuttered because they couldn’t compete with Home Depot,

Porcellini’s wilted and blew away

Armand passed and no one wanted to take up his fight

Duffy’s dried up under the pressure of Applebee’s,

A beautiful way of life was strangled and buried,

Caving in under the weight of corporations.

They don’t care about us…profits are their only friend.

We see it happen everyday,

In small towns all across America.

Towns founded on long time local businesses

Bankrupt because they can’t compete.

Local people forced to settle for less and pay more.

Some say, “If they don’t come here they will just go somewhere else”.

“What about the jobs?”

What about them?

Maybe you would have to commute to work,

But at least our town would still be–our town,

A place we would be proud to call home.

Poetry Prompt #2 –  The Places We Are  by We Drink Because We’re Poets

Fundamental Good (Tanka)

Fundamental good

At the heart of religion

Bastardized by man

For their selfish purposes

All to denigrate others

~

~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~

O’ Silvery Ghost

O’ silvery ghost

Muted light bathes tear-stained cheeks

Shed for my lost love

I beg you–grant me mercy

As I mourn my selfish loss

I was not worthy

Offering only safety

While she offered love

Blame squarely sits upon me

As I fade into the night

Were Today Thy Last (Sonnet)

Were today thy last, wouldst thou giveth all ye had,

Or wouldst thou hoardeth as the miser does.

Hiding his worth from all his lasses and lads,

Vowing to take it with him as if thy soul it was.

~

Foolish art thou who believeth this lie,

For nothing of this world shalt survive the beyond.

To ash it doth turn on the day that we die,

It matters not how precious nor how fond.

~

Thy treasures are but bobbles, no worth doth they hold,

Once thou hath taken thy deep and final breath.

Arrogance and greed, both foolhardy and bold,

Revealed as thou art lowered to thy grave upon death.

~

Giveth now with the fullest of hearts for thy time upon earth is but brief,

Resulting in lightness and joy in thy heart to thy soul this shalt come as relief.

Beautiful Silence (Tanka)

Beautiful silence–

A sweet song so seldom heard

Drowned by modern life

Our zeal for technology

Is making us numb

How Terrible To Be Separated From One’s Love (Acrostic)

How terrible to be separated from one’s love,

Oceans mocking with their insurmountable gauntlet;

Praying on the tender heart as if expendable.

Elicit my wrath you vile beast!

Love conquers all or so the saying goes,

End your repeated assaults on star-crossed lovers

So that those destined to be united might consume.

Save your sour vengeance for hell,

Releasing us to our burning desires.

Over your objections we shall conquer.

My steel shall slaughter your thirst

And leave us to our own destiny.

Neither man nor beast shall stand in our path,

This I vow until my last breath.

I love you, shall be written in the stars

Completing our journey destined by the Creator.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:  This poem was inspired by Julian Froment and the poem he posted today to his love, Ionia Martin.  I have found it very sad that these two people have to live separate lives when they are obviously destined to be together.  I hope that whatever is keeping them apart is resolved very soon.

Unusual For Its Heavenly Glory

Unusual for its heavenly glory,

A simple yet wondrous beam of light;

All colors of the spectrum shining bright.

I would have thought it a rainbow,

But for my own eyes.

Sun outlined in a thin veil of clouds–

It could not be restrained

Spilling its multicolored hues upon the earth;

A perfect column leading straight to heaven.

Mesmerized, I gazed open mouthed,

Would I have perceived this prior,

In my haste would I have been as if blind?

Beauties claim is not staked by the material alone,

This I’ve come to realize.

I’ve opened my eyes,

I’ve opened my ears,

I’ve opened my mind,

And was astonished by the effervescent world…

That surrounds me.

The Gathering Storm (Tanka)

The gathering storm

Perfect bout–Heaven and Hell

There are no victors

Yet we remain undeterred

Fighting ‘til our final day
