Peeling Back The Layers

Peeling back the layers

Like an onion of marble, brick, wood,

Concrete, steel and plaster.

What lies beneath this man-made skeleton?

Flesh, blood, bone,

Hopes, dreams, promise,

Failure, disappointment, longing,

Pain, suffering and sorrow,

Wrapped in the package human.

Wealth nor status makes one immune.

Life infects rich and poor alike,

Birth and death spare no one,

Entering into their pact with nothing

And fulfilling the contract with no reward.

These truths are guaranteed

Despite a desire to bury them in denial, religion or alcohol.

Make what you will of your life

Ignore those that cry to you with outstretched hands,

Divert your eyes from malnourishment,

Turn your back on humanities fallen,

Do this and more without conscience

As a soulless miscreant is bound to do.

This is your choice.

Or join this race we all run…offering,

Time, money, love,

Compassion, sympathy, understanding,

A helping hand, encouragement,

As much or as little as you have,

This is what it means to be human,

To be in communion,

Asking nothing in return.

Mine Alone

These dreams, my dreams, mine alone,

Shared at will or hidden away,

Lived out to fruition or buried in my minds tomb,

My choice, mine alone.

~

Whether they live, whether they die is for me to decide,

They are my minions doing as I say, doing as I do,

Never questioning, never revolting, just being,

Mine to rule, mine alone.

~

Granted at birth, one with the essence,

Natural as breathing, the blood coursing through my veins,

Beholden to my whims, subject to my wishes,

Mine to shape, mine alone.

~

These dreams, my reality, my world,

All I know, all I truly possess,

They can never be taken from me, they are mine,

Mine alone.

Oneness

With eyes shut tight

Shuttering out distractions

While bathing in silence

Breathing becomes the world

Something so basic

So instinctual

Unavoidable

A simple complex action

To truly hear it

To feel it

All else seems to float away

The natural world becomes white-noise

Replaced by the spiritual

Who is to say which is reality

Is not the world what we believe it to be

Our souls as integral as the air

As life sustaining as water

My thoughts float as if dreams

Drifting into consciousness then out

As quietly and softly as they appeared

Until there is nothing

Nothing but the sound of me

Blood coursing through my veins

The beat of my heart

Each breath in rhythm

Energy melding with the natural

I am one with the world

Soul Confined – A Tanka

This soul so confined

Clawing at the gauntlet strong

Broken and bloody

Silent screaming for release

I am left to fight alone

Outward

Sand, coarse and hot runs through my fingers,

Blending seamlessly with others of their kind,

This endless sea of granulated wonder.

Alike, of similar origins, living in their same world;

Not so unlike the vastness of our own terrarium.

Under the skin, are not our similarities overwhelming,

Blood, bone, tissue, mineral, hopes, dreams, ambitions,

Born, living and dying as we all must, it is not a choice,

Nor an option given to us at first breath.

Look hard around you,

Oh, how the tricks of the eye are so convincing,

Seeing only that which is physical.

What does this tell of the being?

What of their hearts, their souls,

Their minds, their aspirations,

Their pain and suffering?

Nothing! For the eye is a fool,

Easily leading and misleading the mind,

Diverting maliciously from another’s essence,

Their true being and all that is important.

The shallowness of outward impressions limits us,

Preventing us from knowing, befriending, understanding.

Ignorance feeds us foremost,

Our temporal gluttony gorges us,

Making us something less than human,

With our flawed vision of what should be.

Specks Of Dust

Specks of dust, like a million tiny travelers

Float in and out of lemon colored rays.

Where did they come from and where are they going?

What were they before they were this,

The dander of cat or dog or me perhaps,

Maybe fragments of antiquity, blown in from the desert

Or from the gardens in my backyard.

They seem eager to get where they are going,

Stopping for nothing or no one,

Determined in their own mindless way,

Traveling the beams into the clear blue sky.

Could they be angels invisible but for the sacred light?

Giving just a glimpse, a brief look into their world,

Then just as quickly they are gone,

Vanishing into the darkness, but always there,

Watching us as we go about our lives.

Maybe this “dust” is not dust at all,

But something more, something alive or animated.

Maybe its a perfect world so unlike our own,

One which we could only hope to aspire too,

Perfection in miniature,

Just maybe.

Shuffle Of Footsteps – A Tanka

Shuffle of footsteps

Outside a closed bedroom door

Nighttime playing tricks

Monsters and demons lurking

Waiting to pounce in your dreams

Waiting – A Tanka

I grow old waiting

Knowing you will never come

Wasting my short time

Logic tells me to move on

But hope keeps me locked in place

Things So Real – A Tanka

Things so real I see

Punished by bizarre demons

Under hellish sky

Shudder and shake, eyes flutter

Another sweat drenched nightmare

Casual Observers

Are we not all but casual observers

This game…though not such a game that governments play

What is it they do not tell us in the name of our own good

Who are they to decide what serves us best

Are these not our lives, our futures, our hopes, our dreams

They toy with these for their own folly

For the sake of national pride we label others as evil

Without looking within at our own flaws

Puffing chests, bellicose, with an arrogance befitting fools

Answering tit-for-tat with ever greater threats of destruction

This chain of ceaseless violence, when will it subside

Years of pain, years of suffering have taken their toll on this weary nation

I ask, what have we won, show me…show us

Do we need another war, more bloodshed of the innocent,

Further sacrifices by our brave men and women delivered as pawns

for subversive economic gain

Isn’t it time to seek peace after so much loss

And break this cycle of violence.
