Stars

Stars, an audience–they look down and laugh,

We stare back jaw slacked, eyes of wonder.

How foolish they must find us,

Our mountains out of molehills;

Stressing and straining over our tiny little lives.

Nothing mortal could compare to that of the universe!

Keeping all of those glorious stars twinkling,

Brightening the slate black sky.

How tired the heavens must be

Inspiring romance, hopes, dreams,

The joining of lovers,

Receiving only occasional recognition.

What do we give in return?

Nothing–we continue to take

Just as we have always done,

Just as we will always do.

Perhaps the stars look upon us as the children we are.

Spoiled yet naive to the ways of this world.

To these sages we look for heavenly guidance

Offering prayers for blessings imagined.

This is in our nature

Looking for the Divine in that which we cannot touch.

Who has not looked skyward and begged for mercy,

Beckoned for release from an ill fate,

Cried out for intervention?

We think ourselves the center of all,

Master of our domain–independent, indestructible

Until we are overwhelmed, broken and drowned in tears.

Then we look out upon the vast audience above

Putting on the grandest of shows for their pleasure,

Hoping, praying for accolades

And furtherance from the stars.

A New Day

A new day,

Erupting with the rise of the tangerine sun,

Just the hint of a paper moon for company before it waves goodbye.

The chance for a fresh beginning,

A farewell to the past.

Yesterday is gone,

Relegated to history…never to return.

‘Tis the beauty of birth–

Offered with each midnight stroke

Comes the infancy of the virgin day.

Is this not a wondrous affair,

A gift not to be squandered?

Wallowing in regret serves no one,

Doing nothing, but smothering the soul;

Lashing out violently–

Becoming master if permitted.

Embrace this moment,

Releasing the past to its tomb.

O’ the possibilities that await us,

With the opportunity to be reinvented

–By the casting of our dreams.

O’ My Youngest One

O’ my youngest one

Do not give up on your dreams

They are yours alone

Others may think they know best

Even I am not immune

Done without malice

My intentions are most pure

Though I am human

Dare to dream my precious child

This is where greatness is born

A Little More Time (Tanka)

“A little more time”

The prayer with each passing day…

With every second

Until it runs out

Watching hopes–dreams fade away

I Lie

I lie…

Down with myself in the darkness

Unable to decipher the meaning of my life.

~

I lie…

To myself just as I always have,

Pretending to be something I am not.

~

I lie…

To others by hiding behind a mask and a smile,

Showing them what they want to see not who I am.

~

I lie…

Everytime I deny my dreams their breath

Leaving them to choke in the pool of my mind.

~

Is stifling our hopes and dreams truly living,

Making the unsatisfying our lifes work?

Were we not born to rise to our own vision of greatness

Not for financial gain alone, but for our God given passions sake?

~

I lie…

But I am trying to bury my fears,

Trying to live the dreams that I was born to realize.

Give Love (Sonnet/Anaphora)

Give love so love remains

Give from the heart with every beat

Give from the soul until it sings love’s refrains

Give until you feel passions heat

~

Live like today shall be your last

Live with gusto until hopes are fulfilled

Live until wildest dreams have surpassed

Live until the time that your heart has been stilled

~

Sing your song with most joyous of voice

Sing with the gladness from heaven above

Sing with the song God gave by his choice

Sing all your days with kindness and love

~

Cherish every moment for the gifts that they bring

For they pass by as quickly as an eagle on his wing

Signs Are Everywhere (Tanka)

Signs are everywhere
If only we had courage
To live out our dreams
But like the acrophobic
We are paralyzed by heights

Peeling Back The Layers

Peeling back the layers

Like an onion of marble, brick, wood,

Concrete, steel and plaster.

What lies beneath this man-made skeleton?

Flesh, blood, bone,

Hopes, dreams, promise,

Failure, disappointment, longing,

Pain, suffering and sorrow,

Wrapped in the package human.

Wealth nor status makes one immune.

Life infects rich and poor alike,

Birth and death spare no one,

Entering into their pact with nothing

And fulfilling the contract with no reward.

These truths are guaranteed

Despite a desire to bury them in denial, religion or alcohol.

Make what you will of your life

Ignore those that cry to you with outstretched hands,

Divert your eyes from malnourishment,

Turn your back on humanities fallen,

Do this and more without conscience

As a soulless miscreant is bound to do.

This is your choice.

Or join this race we all run…offering,

Time, money, love,

Compassion, sympathy, understanding,

A helping hand, encouragement,

As much or as little as you have,

This is what it means to be human,

To be in communion,

Asking nothing in return.

Mine Alone

These dreams, my dreams, mine alone,

Shared at will or hidden away,

Lived out to fruition or buried in my minds tomb,

My choice, mine alone.

~

Whether they live, whether they die is for me to decide,

They are my minions doing as I say, doing as I do,

Never questioning, never revolting, just being,

Mine to rule, mine alone.

~

Granted at birth, one with the essence,

Natural as breathing, the blood coursing through my veins,

Beholden to my whims, subject to my wishes,

Mine to shape, mine alone.

~

These dreams, my reality, my world,

All I know, all I truly possess,

They can never be taken from me, they are mine,

Mine alone.

Soul Confined – A Tanka

This soul so confined

Clawing at the gauntlet strong

Broken and bloody

Silent screaming for release

I am left to fight alone
