Anger–You Can See It On Their Grimaced Faces

Anger–you can see it on their grimaced faces;

Marching, hands raised in civil defiance.

Neither curfew nor militarization will quell them

In the face of injustice.

What passes for authority tries to divert,

Maybe he took the “sweets”, maybe he didn’t,

Maybe he smoked a little weed,

Maybe jaywalking is a capital crime in the south,

Maybe murder is ignored when hidden behind a badge.

So much for civil rights,

So much for equality under the law,

So much for compassion and common decency.

He was eighteen and unarmed,

Of this there is no dispute!

Perhaps he wasn’t an angel…are any of us?

I have bent the law,

Maybe even broken it a time or two,

But I’m still here, breathing, smiling, growing older.

We can deny–

That racism exists,

We can deny–

That blacks are treated differently than whites,

We can deny–

That skin color matters,

But denial doesn’t make it so!

Changing laws do not change hearts,

And time does not necessarily heal…

These are irrefutable facts.

Behind closed doors we disrobe,

Taking off our suit of political correctness,

To reveal naked hate.

We spew the epithets of our fathers,

Who broke the backs of an unwilling immigrant.

It’s as though times have never changed…

And perhaps they haven’t.

The manacles once of iron are now invisible,

The whips of braided leather no longer leave scars,

But the pain, fear and displacement still exists

…In this twenty-first century.

Frozen To The Bone

Frozen to the bone.

Bleeding heart ripped from its soul;

Faith in man–fading!

In an eyes blink we do kill,

No remorse ‘til it’s too late.   This seems oh so cold,

Against what we preach is right,

Yet it doesn’t stop.

We are Neanderthals still,

Little evolved from our past.

Please don’t fool yourselves,

We are wolves disguised as sheep,

Prepared to slaughter.

Show Me Man’s Kindness (Tanka)

Show me man’s kindness

Show me man’s humanity

In spite of himself

I’m not sure it’s possible

With the evil he commits

Wisdom Of A Child

Wisdom of a child–

We do not start out hateful

This we have been taught.

Corrupted by narrow minds

Desiring to suppress.

To what end is this,

But to feed the frail ego

–A disgusting beast!

With claws and fangs it draws blood

Weaving a path called ruin.

O’ Blessed Silence How I Long For Thee (Sonnet)

O’ blessed silence, how I long for thee,

Surrounded by ignorance and fools.

Blind to reality by refusing to see,

They’re being used as propagandist tools.

Is not an informed citizenry a wonderful thing,

With fact-based opinions at their core.

Sadly lost to the masses, they grasp for a ring,

Tarnished from a time long before.

It seems compassion’s lost to the hearts of fellow-men,

Leaving them cold with the worst traits thought past.

Rigid and hateful and unwilling to bend,

Claiming piety with iron-fist holding fast.

The softening of hearts would surely serve us well while still questioning those that lead us.

A sacred obligation as our founders did tell with diplomacy and respect to discuss.

Scattered Amongst The Ashes

Scattered amongst the ashes

A solitary flame flickers

Shedding light on the bleakness of this world.

Perhaps the next child born will be the one to save us from ourselves.

Each first breath offering hope

That our nescience is not irreparable.

Deeming ourselves civilized

We erect gauntlets against what does not fit our world view.

Denying climate change,

Though it stares us in the eye,

Forcing spiritual beliefs

All the while claiming discrimination,

Sloughing off cries of racism

Because admission would make us something less than human.

I see no light amongst the living–

Only more of the same driven by greed and selfishness.

If we are to be rescued it will be by a new guard,

One untainted by our perverted values,

One born with the humanity, the selflessness, the courage

To eradicate the filth that pollutes this planet

With their bastardized vision of God

And their gluttonous appetite for money.

Sticks And Stones

Sticks and stones may break one’s bones,

But words most certainly hurt.

Bones do heal as time has shown,

While words eternal pain can exert.

Some will use age as a valid excuse

For exhibition of poor behavior.

Even if you were some eccentric recluse,

This still wouldn’t serve as your savior.

All the money in this world does not buy you the right

To treat others as something less human.

On judgement day you will see the shortness of sight,

And your legacy will be seeking absolution.

Your racism only serves to sever the bonds

You should have with your sisters and brothers.

Claiming foul play when they choose to respond,

Treating them not as friends, but as others.

Bury your head in the proverbial sand,

Denying your views are archaic.

You won’t get away with the slap of a hand,

For in hate and prejudice you partake.

You’d think that these words would have long ago past

Into the annals of far ancient history.

Yet time and again they rear their ugly heads,

Why to me remains an elusive mystery.

Let bygone-be-bygones aren’t we one and the same,

Dealing with the hand we’ve been given.

Helping one another is the name of the game,

To live in love in this life that we’re living.

We Aren’t Born To Hate (Haiku)

We aren’t born to hate

Instead it is something learned

~~ Taught by ignorance

Stares

Stares

Talking in hushed tones

Diverting eye contact

Ducking low so not to be seen

Prejudice and hatred

What could be more obvious

Skin color

Accent

Weight

Height

Disability

Religion

Sexual orientation

Dress

All poor excuses for ignorance

Next time–look in the mirror

Discrimination

Discrimination

By religious objection

Legally sanctioned

Isn’t it time we grew up

And let bygones be bygones

Yet some of us can’t

Gays can be refused service

In Arizona

That is if the law passes

Welcome back to the stone age

AUTHOR’S NOTE:  For those that are interested here is a link  to the story that prompted me to write this piece.  Arizona is placing a bill in front of the governor for her signature or veto that allows individuals, businesses and religious institutions to deny service or admission, primarily to members of the LGBT community so long as they can show that their discriminatory actions were prompted by their religious convictions.  This is disgraceful in my opinion and certainly does not make me proud to live in this state.
