You’re Running Away

You’re running away
Trying to find your true self
But it eludes you
Self dear one is not a place
Because it lives inside you

My Struggle Persists

My struggle persists.

When confronted with belligerence I am weak;

Anger bubbles up from the depths of my soul.

Though I attempt to be as the sage,

Civil, calm, understanding, as yet I am not.

This disappoints me–disappoints me greatly,

But I have learned to forgive myself.

It is only my humanness barging through

Exposing me for what I am…a mere mortal.

Superhuman, without feelings or emotion,

I suppose not as I was born, live and will die.

Perhaps next time I will have more control,

Understanding that he who presents as my adversary

Is nothing more than my fellow man,

Ensconced with the very same emotions

That I too struggle to contain.

Although They’re Older

Although they’re older

Children still seek approval

It’s human nature

Do not be too judgemental

Or you will push them away

What a tragedy

And a travesty this is

To our flesh and blood

These are wounds that do not heal

Because we need to be right

Solemn And Desperate We Walk This Earth

Solemn and desperate we walk this earth

Spending life in a quest for the Almighty.

The One we think we know through books

Through hymns,

Through symbols,

Through statues,

Through all manner of mankind’s understanding.

Living this life for the hope of something better;

Squandering precious time at the crossroads,

Looking north, south, east and west directionless

Leads to an unfulfilled life–

One of sadness and regret as this door closes.

Assuredly this is not what is thirsted for,

Nor what the Creator desires for his children

Yet we pretend to be omniscient;

Claiming to know what God wants of us,

Acting as judge and jury over our fellow man.

Even the Bishop of Rome has seen the light saying,

“Who am I to judge” realizing his humanness.

What if we were to love our fellow man,

Love ourselves enough to live life to the fullest,

Wouldn’t we be living as we were designed to,

Letting bygones be bygones?

Curmudgeonly

Curmudgeonly, that is me I fear

I swore I would not become my parents loud and clear

I would not criticize the music I hear

Clothes, the hair, nor all they hold dear

~

But I lied or failed does it really matter much

I don’t understand rap, hip hop, electronic dance and such

Pants low with boxers high held up by belt buckle clutch

Publicly grabbing crotch with not the gentlest of touch

~

More critical of the guys than the girls I have found

Cars with whiny mufflers, where’s the glass-pack rumbling sound

Trucks that can’t pick-up cause they’re lowered to the ground

I guess its finally happened what goes around comes around

~

I’m trying my best to break out of this mold

Being more accepting as I so adamantly told

Judging by appearance is a form of profiling bold

Isn’t it bizarre how we transform as we grow old

AUTHOR’S NOTE: These are just a few observations about myself that honestly, I find embarrassing since I promised myself from an early age that I would not succumb to this type of thinking, but to one degree or another I have.  I am working hard to change my mindset so we will have to see where that goes, but I’m sure that at least some of you can relate.

A Beautiful Smile

A beautiful smile, a tender face like your mothers,

A generous heart, we should not compare to the others.

You are not them, you are you, wonderous you,

Be proud of that, forever and ever remain true.

Though mistakes will be made my youngest one…

Know in your soul that you are the light of my day, my morning sun.

Judged more harshly than your sister or brother,

This was not my intention, I would never hope for another.

You are perfectly perfect just the way you are,

Bright as the celestial comet or a shooting star.

In your own way, you bring joy to me with every passing day,

Your laugh, sense of humor, funny faces, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Each of you was born into this world with a gift,

Though oftentimes elusive when ensconced in siblings rift.

This is how it always is and how it has always been,

Its just how humans are, it has never been a sin.

Some are born with smart of book, others with common sense,

Some are gilded with a gift of the arts, while some remain on the fence.

This my sweet–is not a defect or a flaw instilled at birth,

Nor a judgement of your character, or a measure of your worth.

For you are worth the world to me, in all you are with your spirit free,

As I watch you mature and grow to become who you will be.

Outward

Sand, coarse and hot runs through my fingers,

Blending seamlessly with others of their kind,

This endless sea of granulated wonder.

Alike, of similar origins, living in their same world;

Not so unlike the vastness of our own terrarium.

Under the skin, are not our similarities overwhelming,

Blood, bone, tissue, mineral, hopes, dreams, ambitions,

Born, living and dying as we all must, it is not a choice,

Nor an option given to us at first breath.

Look hard around you,

Oh, how the tricks of the eye are so convincing,

Seeing only that which is physical.

What does this tell of the being?

What of their hearts, their souls,

Their minds, their aspirations,

Their pain and suffering?

Nothing! For the eye is a fool,

Easily leading and misleading the mind,

Diverting maliciously from another’s essence,

Their true being and all that is important.

The shallowness of outward impressions limits us,

Preventing us from knowing, befriending, understanding.

Ignorance feeds us foremost,

Our temporal gluttony gorges us,

Making us something less than human,

With our flawed vision of what should be.

With Wisdom Comes Ignorance – A Tanka

I’ve looked within me

Trying to understand life

Yet still it eludes

Wisdom has not come with age

I know less each passing day

Committed

By D. R. DiFrancesco

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your tired eyes look skyward
Begging for comfort without so much as a word
I reach out to you
Cradling you in an embrace born of affection
Expecting nothing in return
Your head resting on my chest
Can you feel my heart beat to your touch
Like a metronome keeping rhythm with your own
Exchanging words without speaking
I can hear your sadness and sense your pain
What can I do to relieve your tortured soul
Provide for you
Offer understanding without judgement
Reassure your lingering doubts
Hold tightly to your trembling hands
I will wade with you through the melancholy tide
You will not be left alone to drown
I am here to keep you afloat when you cannot swim
Don’t be afraid my love
For I will never leave your side
My commitment is eternal
