AUTHOR BIO:

Charles author photo B&WCharles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. Harbor No Ill Will (Tanka)

Harbor no ill will

Make friends of your enemies

Though unnatural

Forgiveness is essential

To live a spirit filled life

So easy to say

In the right circumstances

Though hard to commit

Once anger has taken hold

Breathe deeply and let it go

Segregating Ourselves

Republican, democrat,

Black, white,

Feminist, chauvinist,

Gay, straight,

Religious, atheist,

Liberal, conservative,

Pacifist, warmonger,

Proletariat, capitalist,

Pro-life, pro-choice,

Rich, poor,

Extremist, moderate,

Old, young,

Patriotic, unpatriotic,

Native, immigrant,

We spend so much time segregating ourselves into categories,

That we forget we are all the same.

We are born, we live and then we die,

This is non-negotiable.

Maybe if took the time to walk in our brother’s shoes

We would be less hurried to take vengeance

And this world would be a more peaceful and beautiful place.

Snow Falls–Pure

Snow falls–pure, floating silent on the breath of angels,

Soothing the harsh reality of winters abrasive chill.

We long for the newness of spring, but it cannot be;

Buds cannot blossom without the falling of seed.

Though the pain of withering seems eternal, it is, but life–

Reminding us that we will be called back to whence we came,

Back to the earth, back to the soil that nourished us,

Back to its enveloping arms for everlasting rest.

To those that remain, this offers little comfort.

A void is left that no other can fill,

Instead its life is to serve as a constant reminder–

A living testament to those that came before and are no longer here,

Exuding the beauty and goodness inherited through time.

Though their delicate flower, has sacrificed its petals to the wind

And their stems have crumbled to dust;

Their image remains forever embedded in memory,

Never forgotten–often replicated in their honor.

Just as the lowly flower, we are left to serve as reminders,

Reminders of the harshness of our own winter, that takes;

Yet still it welcomes the beauty of spring with open arms.

Though tainted with elements of sadness,

Spring does promise hope, hope in the joy of birth,

Joy in the remembrance of those departed,

Joy in the love shared, the warm kisses on the cheek,

The hugs, the laughter, the kindest of words;

Joy in having had the pleasure of knowing and being known,

Loving and being loved, cherishing and being cherished.

What greater honor is there in this momentary world?

I can think of none, nor would I trade them for another.

With longing and sorrow we say goodbye to one so loved,

Though our separation is as brief as our living.

We will reunite one day beyond this earth

Shedding this body and freeing our spirit as if no time at all had passed.

Placing our souls into the gentle hands of the Creator,

We take comfort that we will be cared for and cherished in Heaven

Just as we were cared for and cherished in life.

Say not farewell, for farewell tenders nothing but sadness and permanence,

“Until we meet again” seems much more apt

Be firm in the knowledge that we will…”meet again”

In a place of beauty amongst those that we have loved,

Never again to be parted.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: I was asked to speak at my grandmother’s funeral a few days ago and had written a couple of poems that I thought I might read to honor her memory.  This is the one that I did not read, but I hope that you will enjoy it.

Another Christmas

Another Christmas

Filled with anticipation

It comes then its gone

Will spirit leave as quickly

Resulting in depression

The gifts are opened

Dinner and dessert are done

Family–friends gone

What have we left of Christmas

When all excitement passes on

~

~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~

Lives Are Intertwined (Haiku)

Lives are intertwined

Each shaping our world drama

Though we may ne’er meet

~

~~ Dominic R. DiFrancesco ~~

Best of Intentions (Tanka)

Best of intentions

Go astray very often

When offered rashly

Acting without second thought

Can drive a wedge between friends

~

This Nation Has Changed

This nation has changed

Sadly not for the better

Our blood has gone cold

Selfish, greedy and fearful

Unaccepting of our own

~

Once there was a time

Neighbors were as family

Help and help alike

Now it is all about self

Friends and family be damned

~

Love of another

Has been supplanted by greed

A match made in hell

Corrupting our very souls

Leaving us numb and hollow

~

We have become mice

Under the weight of our fears

Freedom taken back

Under the guise of safety

All done for our protection

~

We allow this theft

By elected officials

Willingly chosen

Buying into double-talk

Believing it to be true

~

The Constitution

Used like the Holy Gospels

When convenient

Equality guaranteed

Unless you don’t fit our mold

~

What happened to us

Give me your poor, your tired

Your huddled masses

Until you get in our way

Or we get tired of you

 ~

Simpler Time

To lay in the tall grass

Soaking up summer sun,

I recall a time so much simpler than today,

Carefree, up at dawn, out, exploring,

Seeking out new worlds, new adventures.

Calls for lunch went unheeded,

There just wasn’t the time.

Mother knew, mother always knew

This was part of the plan.

Friends and imagination consumed,

My world for the taking,

King, conqueror, soldier

How I long for those days.

Today kings become tyrants,

Conquerors commit genocide

And soldiers really die.

Games of youth were just silly fun,

There were no consequences,

There was no death, no tyranny.

At the end of the day we’d shake hands,

Smile and run home for dinner,

Dreaming of tomorrow,

Dreaming of our next conquest

From the safety of our beds.

Looking Back

Looking back over rounded shoulders,

At friends who’ve long passed;

He can see them like yesterday,

So much like him today.

“Maybe I don’t want to go forward alone”, he thought,

His blanket of bronze and gold

Offering little warmth to his heart grown cold.

His parched lips quiver under mossy beard,

Longing for a sip of cool mountain water.

What lies ahead scares him

Standing at rivers edge.

In his youth no apprehension would he have shown,

His fearlessness bringing out the best in him,

But no longer is he fearless, no longer is he emulous.

Instead he is resigned to spend his life’s remainder…

Waving goodbye to what was

And what might have been.
