Shattered Confidence – A Tanka

Unsure in my skin

Salient fears consume me

Breaking confidence

Leaving shards of me shattered

Bloody and vulnerable

Strength to Overcome

Sadness, quiet, eerie blows,

On garnished leaves to where who knows,

A fall from grace in painful throes,

To die in forlorn anonymity.

~

Acrid tears fall on arid plain,

O’er rock and berm toward sea of flame,

Where passion burns lone side disdains,

A heart in mangled perpetuity.

~

Asphyxiated soul, torrid and weak,

Heaves vital breath for redolence to seek,

Speechless and winded, powerless to speak,

In silence thy sentience doth flicker.

~

These stolid misfortunes no more shall they hinder,

Gathered in bushel– cloaked as barren split tinder,

Leaving the past a hoard of smoldering cinders,

With courage, volition sustains.

Mirror on the Soul

A warm summer breeze

Skin glistening in the sun

Like the souls mirror

Releasing your true essence

Out to a waiting world

Another one gone

A mother’s tears for her son

Shot dead in the night

In Love With Our Guns

Its such an odd twist, absurd,

Answering gun violence with more guns.

Inconceivable, arming teachers in the classroom,

Firearms on college campus’,

Lines, long and winding for munitions,

A run on guns built for a single purpose…

To kill! The prey, not pheasant or mallard…

But people!

Radical outbursts of infringement ravage the land

While cooler heads say no in retort.

Jack-booted thugs do not knock at your door,

Confiscating what is yours.

An instrument of deaths existence

Does not grant license to possess.

Shall RPG, bazooka or grenade launcher be permitted?

Logic to the logical says a resounding no!

I ask you– where does this stop,

When does this madness stop?

Have we not lost enough treasured children,

Have we not seen the senseless acts of violence,

Families and lives destroyed.

This is not the wild west, Tombstone, The Ok Corral,

Time has come to let the gunslinger rest.

This is the twenty-first century for God’s sake,

…Not 1776.

A child, sacred

Conceived out of love or lust

Shouldn’t suffer pain

Gone

The light fails me,

I open my eyes,

Hoping to see more clearly,

But there is no focus.

~

Nothing is as is should be,

My head hurts in the painful quiet,

There is no comfort,

In this cold empty bed.

~

I drove me to this madness,

And you, away in disgust,

I didn’t try to stop you,

Stubbornly shunning you.

~

Your tears did not deter,

I swore you’d be back,

How could you live without me,

After all these years.

~

But emptiness speaks volumes,

Shouting your answer,

“I’m gone!”

On my once deaf ears.

This cacophony

Spills from my mind, haphazard

Like a raging flood

Drenching everything in sight

With water, mud and debris

Words I (Try to) Live By

As dramas unfold in life,

We seek guidance wherever it may be found,

God, government, friends, family,

Selectively choosing that which we find amiable,

While discarding what is distasteful,

This grants us no benefit,

Except to the feeble mind which construed.

At times we must exhibit courage through self-sacrifice,,

Enduring the consequences of our thoughts and deeds,

In order to reap our just reward,

In this truth, I strive to live my life,

To curb unkind thoughts,

Withhold unhelpful actions,

And consider every man my equal and friend.
